HARNESS-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,393, dated January 27, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADDISON C. VALKER, of Merrill, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in HarnessBuckles, of which the following is a specification.

lllhis invention relates more particularly to an improvement in that class of buckles which are employed for securing together two straps, one of which lies on or crosses the other-for instance, the buckles which are employed for securing the end of the cheekfstrap to the chin-strap of a halter.

The object of my invention is to produce a light, strong, and durable buckle having an attractive appearance; and my invention consists to that end of the improved construction of the buckle, which will be hereinafter fully explained, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a rear elevation, of my improved buckle applied to a halter. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in line x m, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved buckle. Figs. 5 and 6 are front elevations of moditied constructions of the buckle.

Like letters of reference denote like parts in the several figures.

A represents the dat frame of the buckle, which may be square, rectangular, or oblong in form, and plane, or lightly curved, as may be desired. I

a represents four depressed arms. extending diagonally from the corners ofthe frame downwardly and inwardly and uniting in a central plate, b, on which the iixed tongue cis formed.

The plate b is depressed below the level of the I frame A, and the tongue c extends from the plate b forwardly, or toward the frame A. The four arms a form with the frame A two end loops, d d, and two side loops, d' d', each adapted to receive a strap.

In Figs. l, 2, and 3, E represents the chinstrap, and F the Gheekstrap, of a halter, and the buckle is represented as being applied for securing the lower end ot the cheek-strap to the chin-strap. The latter passes through the end loops, d d, of the buckle, and the cheekstrap passes through one of the side loops, d. The plate b and the inner portions ofthe arms a connected therewith are arranged so far below the level of the frame A as to accommodate the two straps in the intervening space.

The four arms a, extending to the corners of the frame A, form braces which :firmly support the corners of the frame and render the buckle very strong and durable, while the frame and arms can be made comparatively light without sacrificing strength. The frame A is exposed on the face of the outer strap,E, and imparts to the buckle a substantial and attractive appearance.

The buckle may be provided with a side loop, G, as represented in Fig. 5, for engaging the snap-hook of the throat1atch therewith; or it may be provided with a divided loop, H, as represented in Fig. 6, for supporting the two parts of a chin-strap; or it may be provided with a check-rein loop, or any other attachment, as may be desired.

I claim as my invention# A buckle composed of a fonrsided frame, A, diagonal arms a, depressed below the frame, united at their inner ends, and connected at their outer ends to the corners ofthe frame, and forming end loops, d, and side loops, d', therewith, and a fixed tongue, c, supported by said arms, substantially as set forth.
