UNITED STfrrEsl PATENT Ornrcise ERASTUS M. KINNE, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,227, dated January 9, 1883.
Application filed August 14, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it 'may conoci-n:
Be it known that I, EnAs'rUs M. KINNE, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relatesto an improvement in buckles;y and it consists in the arrangement and combination ot' parts, that will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure lis an inverted perspective of the body of the buckle attached to the llame-tug. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the bail. Fig. 3 is a Fig. 4 is a vertical section ofthe buckle complete.
A represents the frame of the buckle, at the front end of which is the cross-bar B, to which the heme-tug is secured. The two sides of the frame, just in the rear of this cross-bar, 'are widened outward, as shown, and are made and on the outer sides of these thickened or widened-out parts C are formed the usual loops. From the part C the'frame is curved downward a suitable distance, where the sides are again connected or united by the cross-bar E, which has its rear edge somewhat lower than the front one, and these cross-bars B E form the only bottom part of the frame upon which the trace directly rests. The rear end of the frame is made narrower than any other part, and ,is curved upward, as shown, so as to allow the trace to readily pass under, and terminates inr the cross-bar F. In the under o'r inner edge of the widest part C ot the buckle are made the notches H, in whichnotches the projections I on the ends of the bail catch. This bail is passed through the tug next to the rear end ofthe name-tug, and has the trace to pass through it, the top of the bail or tongue-piece alone bearing upon the trace. Caught in or under the top of this bail is the tongue-piece L, which ton guepiece is turned upward at its rear end, as shown, and is provided uponeach of its rear corners with aprojection, O, for the purpose ot' preventing the tongue-piece from being forced through the bail. Upon the top of thistongue-piece, near its center, are also formed the projections N, which serve to prevent the tonguepiece from being drawn backward through thebail when the dratt is applied to the trace. On the under side of the front end ot this tongue-piece. which is also tongue is secured, passes through the hail, but
does not bear upon its lower'purt, and, being forced downward by the tongue-pieceortongue, and having no other part upon which to rest except the cross-bar, which forms the only part of the bottom which the frame has, the trace, when draft is applied to it, is pressed downward by means of the supports, asshowu by dotted lines, and thus enabling it to be held more rigidly and securely in the buckle, and Y thedan ger of its slipping or becoming detached correspondingly lessened.
Having thus described my invention, II
claim- A buckle composed of the frame A, having the cross-bar B at one end and the cross-bars E at the other, and having the notches H, in combination with the bail and the tonguepiece L, having projections O N and lug P,
substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 4th day of August, 1880.
