MOR/A/ BY HTTORNEY 3,108,347 THIN WALLED LOCK SLIDER FQR ENE-SEED SEPARABLE FASTENERS This invention relates to sliders as used in conjunction with separable fasteners for coupling and uncoupling the stringers of separable fasteners and, particularly, wherein said stringers are of the one-sided construction, namely with the scoops disposed on one surface only of, the stringers. More particularly, the invention deals with a slider of thin walled construction, so as to occupy a minimum projection on the exposed surface of the stringer tapes.
Still more particularly, the invention deals with a slider of the character described, wherein the pull includes cam means forcing the stringers into locked engagement with the slider when the pull is in its locked position, thereby definitely retaining the slider in any desired position on the stringers.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is an enlarged plan view of a slider made according to my invention, with parts of the construction broken away.
FIG. 2 is a section substantially on the broken line 2-2 of FIG. 1, with part of the foreground structure omitted in order to diagrammatically illustrate part of a stringer tape, parts of the construction being broken away; and
FIG. 3 is a section substantially on the line 33 of FIG. 1 showing primarily one wall structure of the slider, part of the construction being broken away and diagrammatically indicating in dot-dash lines the tapes only of a pair of stringers.
The slider comprises a die cast body defined by a wall 11, generally of the outline contour illustrated in P16. 1 of the drawing, the narrow end portion 12 of this wall having upstanding side flange-s 13 which flare outwardly, as indicated in dotted lines at 14 in FIG. 1 onto the wide or flared end portion 15 of the slider. Centrally of the wide end portion 15 is an upward projection or frog 15, the forward end of which is contracted, as clearly seen at 17 in FIG. 1 of the drawing, and the contracted end includes an upwardly extending rounded key lug 18. Extending through the frog 16 is a slightly tapered aperture '19, one end of which is flared, as indicated at 20, to receive the flared riveted end 21 of a rivet pin or coupling element 22 employed to secure a top wall or cover plate 23 and spring member 24 to the body it). At 25 is shown the head of the rivet.
The top wall or plate 23 generally conforms to the peripheral contour of the body 10, with the exception that the contracted end portion 26 of this wall, overlying the end 12, terminates short of the end of the wall 12, as indicated at 2'7 in FIG. 1 of the drawing. The plate 23 partially defines the channel of the slider body, which channel is within the side flanges 13. The wall or plate 23 is preferably made of a thin hard sheet metal and, in some instances, stainless steel can be used. The purpose of this, including the thin wall structure of the spring member 24, is to minimize the projection of the slider beyond the outer or exposed surface 28 of the stringer tape 29 of a separable fastener, diagrammatically shown in FIG. 2 of the drawing, part of the stringer tape being did-8,347 Patented Oct. 29, 1963 sectioned. At 30 are indicated a few of the scoops of the stringer which are disposed solely upon the surface 31 of the tape 29. At this time and simply by way of illustration, the stringer, diagrammatically illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing, could be a one-sided separable fastener stringer in accordance with the teachings in my prior application Serial Number 104,737, filed April 21, 1961. It will be understood, however, that the slider can be utilized in conjunction with any type and kind of onesided separable fasteners.
The wall or plate 23 is apertured, as seen at 32, to receive the rivet and further apertured, as seen at 33, to receive the key lug 18 to, thus, definitely position and a-line the plate 23 on the body ll? of the slider. Forwardly of the aperture 33, the plate 23 has an irregular aperture 34, comprising a long portion 35 in its extension transversely of the wall 23 and a shorter key portion 36, clearly illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The transverse dimensions of the key portion are such as to snugly receive the terminal end 37 of the curved spring yoke 38 at the free end of the spring member 24, the member 24 being apertured, as seen at 39, to receive the rivet 22. t will, thus, be apparent that the member 24 is definitely positioned on the wall or plate 23.
At 40 I have shown, in part, the pull for actuating the slider. The pivot end of the pull is apertured, as indicated at 41 in FIG. 1 of the drawing, to form two side arms -42 of the same construction. These arms terminate in outwardly and downwardly extending cam portions, one of which is clearly seen at 4?: in FIG. 2 of the drawing, and both cam portions being illustrated in FIG. 3 of the drawing. These arms and cam portions are joined by a rounded pivot pin, clearly seen at 44 in PEG. 3 of the drawing. The pin fits snugly within the spring yoke 38, the latter being tensioned to urge the pivot end of the pull in the direction of the wall 11, particularly in urging the cam portions 43 into engagement with the tapes 29 of the stringers, as indicated in dot-dash lines in FIG. 3 of the drawing, to urge the scoops 30 in the direction of the wall l-l and securely clamp them into fixed engagement on the wall 11 in locking the slider against movement on the stringers. In dotted lines, part of the pull ill has been indicated in its raised operative position in movement of the slider along the stringers as with other devices of this type and kind.
It will appear from a consideration of FIGS. 1 and 3 of the drawing that the cams 43 operate in ends of the long portion 35 of the aperture 34. It will also appear, from the diagrammatic tdot-dash line illustration of the tapes 29 in FIG. 3 of the drawing, that both stringers are engaged by the cam portions in providing a secure locking of the slider on the stringers.
As with other sliders, the spacing between the flared ends 14 of the flanges 1'3 and the bevelled or contracted ends of the frog 14 from the channels permitting movement of the scoops into coupling and uncoupling engagement in movement of the slider in both directions along the stringers.
By virtue of the thin walled structure of the outer exposed surface portion of the slider and the arrangement of the pull thereon, the slider will present a minimum amount of extension beyond the surface 2-8 of the stringers 29; thus adapting the fastener 311d slider for use on various types and kinds of apparel, preventing my undue bulge or projection of the fabric of the apparel lying over the pull. By way of illustration, one extremely practical use of a structure of this type and kind is for sliders applied to trousers.
It will be understood that, in assemblage of the parts, the wall or plate 23 is positioned upon the body it}, after which, the member 24, with the pivot pin end of the 3 pull arranged in the yok 38, is positioned on 23', after which, the rivet pin 22 is passed through the apertures 39, 32 and 19 and is then riveted over, as at 21, securing the parts together.
In the use of the s ider, it will be apparent that, when the pull 4%) is moved into the full line position of FIG. 2, the spring yoke 33 is tensioned outwardly and, thus, operates to securely retain the pull in the locked position.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
'1. A thin walled lock slider for a separable slide fastener comprising a slider body with a base wall flaring towards one end and having integral therewith a projecting frog, the other contracted end of the wall having integral therewith side flanges extending onto the flared end or" the wall, the height of said frog above said base wall being greater than the height of the slide fastener, a flat cover plate for said slider body substantially thinner than said base wall and separate from said slider body, said cover plate being seated on said frog over said base wall and being secured to said frog to form with said base wall and said side flanges a channel to receive the fastener therein, a spring plate arranged upon and aflixed to said cover plate and having a curved spring yoke at one end, a pull having a pair of projecting side arms therealong at one end flanking said yoke and almost abutting the sides of said yoke, and pivot pin means between said side arms and said yoke to form a pivotal coupling connection between said pull and said yoke in the form of a knuckle joint, said pull being retained again-st separation from said spring plate by said pivotal coupling connection, said side arms forming respective cams, and said cover plate being apertured to permit said cams to project through said cover plate into locking engagement with two separate sections of the fastener in said channel wi en said pull lies along the cover plate, said cams being moved into position to release the slider when the pull is raised angularly away from said cover plate.
2. A thin walled lock slider as described in claim 1, said cover plate generally conforming in peripheral contour to that of said body, said cover plate having a keying aperture and said frog having a key lug projecting therefrom into said aperture to key said cover plate to said frog, and a single rivet passing through said frog, said cover plate and said spring plate to secure said plates to said frog, said spring plate extending over said keying aperture and over said key lug and concealing sai keying aperture and said key lug.
3. A thin walled lock slider for a separable slide fastener comprising a slide body with a base wall flaring towards one end and having integral therewith a projecting frog, the other contracted end of the wall having integral therewith side flanges extending onto the flared end of the wall, a thin cover plate for said slider body fiat throughout its area and generally conforming to said slider body in peripheral contour, said cover plate being separate from and secured to said frog over said base wall to form with said base wall and said side flanges a channel to receive the fastener therein, a spring plate arranged upon and ai'iixed to said cover plate and having a curved spring yoke at one end, said cover plate having a keying aperture and said frog having a key lug projecting therefrom into said aperture to key said cover plate to said frog, a single rivet passing through said frog, said cover plate and said spring plate to secure said plates to said 'frog, a pull having a pair of projecting side arms therealong at one end flanking said yoke and almost abutting the sides of said yoke, and a pivot pin connected to and extending between said side arms and journalled in said yoke to form a pivotal coupling connection between said pull and said yoke in the form of a knuckle joint, said pull being retained against separation from said spring plate by said pivotal coupling connection, said cover plate having a second aperture extending at least the full width between the outer sides of said arms and presenting an edge extending along said yoke in front thereof, said pivot pin extending into said second aperture in all angular positions of said pull, said yoke having its free end extending into said second aperture close to said edge in all angular positions of the pull, said side arms forming respective cams projecting through said second aperture into locking engagement with two separate sections of the fastener in said channel when said pull lies along the cover plate, said cams being moved into position to release the slider when the pull is raised angularly away from said cover plate.
4. In combination with a lock slider as defined in claim 3, a separable fastener including companion stringers, each stringer including a tape with scoops disposed only on one surface of the tape, leaving the outer exposed surface of the tape unobstructed, said slider being arranged with respect to said fastener to cause said fastener to extend through said channel with the outer exposed surfaces of the stringer tapes adjacent to the cover plate of the slider and the scoops extending from said stringer tapes towards the base wall or" the slider body.
5. A thin walled lock slider for a separable slide fastener comprising a slider body with a base wall flaring towards one end and having integral therewith a projecting frog, the other contracted end of the wall having integral therewith side flanges extending onto the flared end of the wall, a thin cover plate for said slider body separate from said slider body and secured to said frog over said base wall to form with said base wall and said side flanges a channel to receive the fastener therein, a spring plate arranged upon and afllxed to said cover plate and having a curved spring yoke at one end, a pull having a pair of projecting side arms therealong at one end flanking said yoke and almost abutting the sides of said yoke, and pivot pin means between said side arms and said yoke to form a pivotal coupling connection between said pull and said yoke in the form of a knuckle joint, said pull being retained against separation from said spring plate by said pivotal coupling connection, said side arms forming respective cams, said cover plate being apertured to permit said cams to project through said cover plate into locking engagement with two separate sections of the fastener in said channel when said pull lies along the cover plate, said cams being moved into position to release the slider when the pull is raised angularly away from said cover plate, said cover plate having a recess underneath said yoke extending at least along the full width of said yoke, and presenting an edge extending along the width of said yoke and bordering said recess opposite to the free end of said yoke, said yoke having its free end extending into said recess close to said edge in all angular positions of said pull.
6. A thin walled lock slider for a separable slide fastener comprising a slider body with a base wall flaring towards one end and having integral therewith a projecting frog, the other contracted end of the wall having integral therewith side flanges extending onto the flared end of the wall, a thin cover plate for said slider body separate from said slider body and secured to said frog over said base wall to form with said base wall and said side flanges a channel to receive the fastener therein, a spring plate arranged upon and atlixed to said cover plate and having a curved spring yoke at one end, a pull having a pair of projecting side arms therealong at one end flanking said yoke and almost abutting the sides of said yoke, and pivot pin means between said side arms and said yoke to form a pivotal coupling connection between said pull and said yoke in the form of a knuckle joint, said pull being retained against separation from said spring plate by said pivotal coupling connection, said side arms forming respective cams, said cover plate 5 having an aperture to permit said cams to project through said cover plate into locking engagement with two separate sections of the fastener in said channel When said pull lies along the cover plate, said cams being moved into position to release the slider when the pull is raised 5 angularly away from said cover plate, said pivot pin means comprising a pivot pin connected to and extending between said side arms and journalled in said yoke, said aperture extending at least the full width between the outer sides of said arms, said pivot pin extending into 10 said aperture in all angular positions of said pull.

A THIN WALLED LOCK SLIDER FOR A SEPARABLE SLIDE FASTERNER COMPRISING A SLIDER BODY WITH A BASE WALL FLARING TOWARDS ONE END AND HAVING INTEGRAL THEREWITH A PROJECTING FROG, THE OTHER CONTRACTED END OF THE WALL HAVING INTEGRAL THEREWITH SIDE FLANGES EXTENDING ONT THE FLARED END OF THE WALL, THE HEIGHT OF SAID FROG ABOVE SAID BASE WALL BEING GREATER THAN THE HEIGHT OF THE SLIDE FASTENER, A FLAT COVER PLATE FOR SAID SLIDER BODY SUBSTANTIALLY THINNER THAN SAID BASE WALL ANS SEPARATE FROM SAID SLIDER BODY, SAID COVER PLATE BEING SEATED ON SAID FROG OVER SAID BASE WALL AND BEING SECURED TO SAID FROG TO FORM WITH SAID BASE WALL AND SAID SIDE FLANGES A CHANNEL TO RECEIVE THE FASTENER THEREIN, A SPRING PLATE ARRANGED UPON AND AFFIXED TO SAID COVER PLATE AND HAVING A CURVED SPRING YOKE AT ONE END, A PULL HAVING A PAIR OF PROJECTING SIDE ARMS THEREALONG AT ONE END FLANKING SAID YOKE AND ALMOST ABUTTING THE SIDES OF SAID YOKE, AND PIVOT PIN MEANS BETWEEN SAIJD SIDE ARMS AND SAID YOKE TO FORM A PIVOTAL COUPLING CONNECTION BEWTWEEN SAID PULL AND SAID YOKE IN THE FORM OF A KNUCKLE JOINT, SAID PULL BEING RETAINED AGAINST SEPARATION FROM SAID SPRING PLATTE BY SAID PIVOTAL COUPLING CONNECTION, SAID SIDE ARMS FORMING RESPECTIVE CAMS, AND SAID COVER PLATE BEING APERTURED TO PERMIT SAID CAMS TO PROJECT THROUGH SAID COVER PLATE INTO LOCKING ENGAGEMENT WITH TWO SEPARATE SECTIONS OF THE FASTENER IN SAID CHANNEL WHEN SAID PULL LIES ALONG THE COVER PLATE, SAID CAMS BEING MOVED INTO POSITION TO RELEASE THE SLIDER WHEN THE PULL IS RAISED ANGULARLY AWYA FROM SAID COVER PLATE.
