"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHEAL HERBERT, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,423, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed July 18, 1884. (No model.)
T0 in whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIOI-IEAL E. HERBERT, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part thereof.
My invention is an improvement in the class of steam-boilers formed of two horizontal sections, which are of semiannular or approximately semi-annular shape, and have connecting-pipes, and are so separated and arranged as to form between them a flue; through which the products of combustion pass to the stack or chimney. I
My improvement is embodied in the specific construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my invention in perspective, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the boiler detached from the masonry.
,A indicates the inner and lower section, and B the upper and outer section, of the boiler. The two sections are made semi-annular in cross-section, and the upper section is made ot' greater capacity at its middle or higher portion to provide space for the steam, The two sections are connected together by the circulating-pipes (l at the front end, which connect the top portion of the lower section with the end of the upper section, and by the pipes D at the sides, which connect the lower portion of one ection with the lower portion of the other. The rear end of the upper section at E is made semi-cylindrical to form a wall for closing the rear end of the furnace, and to utilize the heatingsurface thus provided. The inner section is arranged to leave a space between its rear end and the rear wall of the upper section, to provide a continuous passage or flue from the combustiolrchamber along between the said sections to the front of the boiler. The brick-work F forms a continuation of the flue back over and along the upper section to the chimney G.
H indicates the coal-magazine, located at the front end of the upper section, and partially set within the lowersection, and having its lower end slightly inclined to the rear. The bridge I is made hollow, and communicates with the sides of the lower section, forming a part thereof.
What I claim is The combination of the upper section, having a semi-annular chamber communicating with a semi-cylindrical chamber at its-rear end, the lower and inner section having a semi-annular chamber, and having the hollow bridge communicating therewith, the circulating-pipes connecting said sections together, and the coal-magazine located at the front end of the boiler, substantially as shown and described.
MIOHEAL E. HERBERT.
