Description

A. WIGZELL.
Steam Boilers.
N0. 134,232, Patented Dem-24,1872.
lilnmlnmllm n NITED STATES P'rn'r OFFICE.
ATWOOD WIGZELL, OF HALIFAX, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134, 32, dated December 24, 1872.
To all lwhom zt may concern:
Be it known that I, Acrwoon WIGznLL, of Halifax, in the county of Yorkshire, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specitication This invention relates to the construction and general arrangement of steam-boilers,
' tween the tubes of the other part-,thus forming one or more horizontal tiers of these conical tubes, two or more such tiers being contained in my improved boiler and operating in combination with a steam-chamber, the arrangement of which and the furnace and flue being as hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation of the boiler, with the arch or mason-work shown in section. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of Fig. 3 taken on the liney y. Fig. isasection of Fig. 3 taken on the line a.' x.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the arch or mason work by which the boiler is covered. B is the furnace.'
C is the grate; C', the line. D represents two or more horizontal tubes parallel with the sides of the arch and with each other, from the inner sides of which project the conical tubes E. These tubes D are arranged as seen in Fig. 3, the lower ones being connected with the upper ones by the vertical tubes F. The upper pair of tubes D are connected with the steam-drum G, which is supported parallel with the tubes D by the inclined connecting-tubes H. This drum or st'eam-chambermay be of any size or length,
but preferably of the length of the tubes D. It may be exposed directly to the action of the escaping gaseous products of combustion, so as to superheat the steam, or the action ofsuch heat may be modified by the interposition of y masonry, or by any other means, as may be found advisable.
The feedwater is pumped into one of the lower pair of the tubes D, and rises so as to fill these tubes and partly ill the upper pair, as
seen in Fig. 4. The water flows into the con. ical tubes, and these tubes, forming, as they do.
one or more horizontal tiers surrounded at all times by the products of combustion, present a very extended steam-generatin g surface.
In Fig. l three tiers of these conical tubes are represented; but I do not contine myselt'to any particular number ot' those tiers.
The manner of constructing the tubes is seen y in Fig. 5. The conical-tubes project out horizontally from the parallel tube D` and are attached by means of bolts or rivets; but they may be cast together, or one may be cast and the other wrought.
V The manner of constructing` the tubes forms no part of my invention.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The series ot" horizontal tubes D D D, connected together by vertical tubes F, and with the steam-drum G by inclined Vpipes H, and provided with intermediate horizontal conical tubes E, all combinedand arranged in relation to each other and to the arch A and furnace B, substantially a-s and for the purpose described.
