FEG.
ROBERT G. S. COLLAMOBE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ADJUSTABLE BUTT-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,033, dated December 30, 1884'.
Application filed September 15, 15383. (No model!) To all whom, 'L' may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. S. GOLLA- MORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Butt-Hinge and Hinge Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved means for adjusting a doorl to its jamb or frame and to the sill, in thc event of its binding or sagging, after it has been hung and without removing the door.
1t is well known that doors after they have been hung will in most cases, owing to the expansion or contraction of the ja mb or the doors themselves, or to the settlement of the walls or frame, bind or sag in such a way as to render them diflicult to close and also difiicult to lock when the bolt falls a little below its proper place in relation tothe striker.
, In order 'to obviatc this objection and remedy the difliculty, it is necessary to 'take the doors off and remove a portion of the edge, an op-V eration requiring time and skill and involving expense. In adjusting a door vertically as now practiced a washer is placed upon the hingeispindle, which also necessitates the 'removal of thc door.
My invention is designed to obviate these diiiiculties; and it consists of a plate or piece of metal which is to be sunk into and secured to the jamb where the hinges are to be. In this plate or piece of metal is a recess of sufiicient length vertically to admit of the insertion oi' one ofthe leaves of a hinge, but leaving a space between the leaf and the plate. Passing through the plates are screws, upon which the leaf of the hingebears, holes of K smaller diameter than the heads of the screws being made over the screws, so as to enable them to be turned as desired. By turning the inner screws and at the same time adjusting the hinge-screws the hinge-leaf can be moved toward or away from the frame, and thus adjust the position of the door relatively to the frame. as desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of an open hinge with my invention attached. Fig. 2 is an end or side elevation of my attachment connected to a 1 d ri ver passing through the said holes.
portion ofthe door-frame and to a leaf of the hinge. Fig. 8 isa vertical section of the hingejoint and spindle on the line x of Fig. 1. Fig; 4 is a side view of the plate attachment, and Fig. 5 is a rear view of the same.
A B represent the leaves of an ordinary butt-hinge with the joint E E. C is a metal plate ofthe form sidewis'e as shown in Fig. 4. and is cast with the bosses or projections D on its rear or inner side. These bosses are made hollow, and are screw-threaded. The
plate C, with the bosses D, is sunk into the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, the face of its upper and lower ends being iush with the face ofthe frame. A portion of one of the leaves B is fitted within the recess of the plate C andA so as to admit of being freely moved between the upper and lower projections, G C, ofthe recess. The portion of the leafB which is fitted to the plate C bears upon the heads of screws D, the heads of which are of a little larger diameter than the holes in the leaf B, so as to admit of their being turned by a screwlt will thus be seen that by turning the screws D inv or out and correspondingly adjusting the screws D, which secure the hinge to the doorfraine attachment, the position of the door will be relatively adjusted to the frame, as required. The upper portion of the joint E is attached to or forms a part of the leaf A, which is secured to the door, and the lower part, E', is connected to the leaf B. The two parts are separated a little distance from each other at the center, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. rlhe spindle is enlarged at the center F, as shown in Fig. 3, with diminished upper and lower ends iitting, respectively, in the more solid upper and lower joints, E E.
In the lower end of the joint E is fitted a screw-plug, G', the upper end, g, of which is diminished and screw-threaded to screw into the more solid portion of the joint E', and upon the top of the screw-threaded portion g is supported the lower end of the spindle. Provision is made for turning the screw-plug G by means of a screw-driver, or the outer end may be so constructed as to be turned by a wrench. By turning the screw-plug G up or down the spindle carrying the upper portion of the hinge, which is attached to the door,
will be correspondingly raised or lowered, and thus allow the door to be adjusted higher or lower, as required.
I do not clainnbroadly, a pintlc-adjlisting` device; but
That l claim as my invention7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The metal plate O, constructed with the upper and lower projections, C C, and with the hollow screw-threaded bosses D, in conibination with the leaf of a butt-hinge, B, and provided with attaehing and adjusting screws, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the leaves A B, provided with lthe jointsE E', the spindle F, screw r 5 G, and the recessed plate C, the hollow screwthreaded bosses D, and screws D', as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 2o seribing witnesses.
ROBERT e'. s. ooLLAMoRE.
