Application June .22, 1948, Serial No. 34,411
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in hinge structures for doors, more specifically horizontally swinging doors mounted on pivots disposed above and below the upper and lower door edges,
1 Claim. "(01.16-132) and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate proper fitting of such doors into their frames. v v i This object is achieved by the provision of an adjustable hinge ar-m which is intended for use in substitution for the conventional rigid or non-adjustable; arm, an important feature of the adjustable arm residing inthe provisionof means for shifting-...the.door in a vertical plane so that proper fitting ofthe door in that regard may be" assured. An additional feature of the invention resides in the provision ofmeansfor longitudinally adj'usting the 'hinge arm, whereby the point of contact'of thefreeend portion of the hinged arm with the door-may be moved further from or closer to the actual hinge pin.
An additional feature of the invention lies in providing means for shifting or adjusting the free end portion of the hinge arm radially, so
to speak, with respect to the hinge pin and to the upper or lower edge of the door, so that the relative position of the hinge arm with respect to the door may also be varied in that particular regard.
An important advantage of the invention resides in its simplicity of construction, convenience in adjustment, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture and installation.
With the above more important objects and features in View and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig-ure 1 is a cross sectional view, taken in the vertical plane and showing the invention in association with the bottom portion of a door and floor or door frame;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, taken sub- Like characters of reference are employed'td designate like parts in the specification "and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings" in detail, the reference character It! indicates the lower edge portion of a horizontally swing able door, while l2 indicates a floor or a door frame provided with a hinge'unit M of any conventional type, the latter preferably being em-.
bedded in the floor l2 and including a substantially upright pivot pin or hinge pin l6, con-t figurated substantially as shown.
In accordance with conventional practice,
hinge arm ismounted on this pin andhaspne end portion. thereof anchored to the door, but
this arrangement obviously does not provide for" any adjustmentsuch as the door may require in order to assure proper "fit thereof within the dome frame. -As"has beenstated inthe opening paraggraphs of thi's s'pecification," the instant inven' tion contemplates theprovis'ionof sucnedjust:
ment, the invention assuming the form of an adjustable hinge arm designated generally by the reference character I8, which is intended for use in substitution for the conventional nonadjustable arm, as will be presently explained.
The adjustable hinge arm l8 embodies in its construction what may be referred to as inner and outer sections 20, 22 respectively, these sections being longitudinally aligned and having sectionally reducedadjacent portions 24, 26 respectively which are overlapped in such manner that the height or thickness of the arm l8 remains substantiallythe same, throughout its length.
It is to be noted that the section 20 is provided in the free end portion thereof with a suitable bore 28 whereby the entire arm is stantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 2, and;
Figure 5 is a group perspective view Oi 116 invention per se.
mounted upon the aforementioned pin I6 of the hinge unit I4, while the portion 24 thereof is formed with a plurality of screw-threaded apertures 30. Moreover, the portion 26 of the section 22 is formed with a longitudinally extending slot 32 which is intended to receive a plurality of adjusting bolts 34, equipped with suitable washers 36, these bolts engaging the apertures 30 and thereby firmly, yet adjustably securing the two sections 20, 22 of the arm l8 together.
The section 20 is also provided adjacent the pivot or hinge pin IS with a plurality of screw threaded bores 38 to receive adjusting screws 40, the shanks of which extend upwardly and are supportably engageable with the mid-portion 42 of a substantially U-shaped channel 44 secured to clearly apparent.
Finally, the free end portion of the arm section 22 is formed with a pair of transversely extending, screw-threaded apertures 46 which accommodate adjusting screws 48, the latter having flat heads 50 which are engageable with the inner surfaces of the side portions 52 of the channel 44, as is best shown in Figures 2 and 4.
It is to be noted that the aforementioned hinge pin l 6 projects upwardly into the channel 44 and that the entire arm I8 is disposed within the channel, substantially as shown.
When the invention is placed in use, the hinge arm is installed on the pin 16 within the channel 44 substantially as described, and the door may be adjusted vertically within its name by simply tightening or loosening the screws or bolts 43, whereby the door is lowered or ra sed with respect to the floor l2, as will be clearly apparent, Moreover, the overall length of the arm 18 may be pre-adjusted by simply sliding the sections 21!, 22, one with respect to the other, and there after tightening the clamping bolts 34. Finally, the position of the arm H! with respect to the hinge pin 6 and to the door may be adjusted radially, so to speak, by simply tightening one of the bolts 48 and loosening the remaining bolt 48, whereby the position of the free end portion of the section 22 within the channel 44- may be adjusted as indicated by the arrow 54 in Figure 2. Needless to say, it is intended that the door together with the associated channel 44 be removed from its position in the door frame, so as to expose the arm l8 while adjustment of the screws 40, 34, and 48 is being efiected.
It may be also added that while in the accompanying drawings the invention is shown as being disposed adjacent the lower edge portion of the door, a further hinge arm, similar to that dis closed, is to be provided adjacent the upper edge 4 portion of the door, as will be readily understood.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will readily be apparent from the foregoing disclosure, and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The combination of an upright hinge pin, a horizontal hinge arm adapted to underlie the lower edge of a door and having an intermediate portion thereof mounted on said pin, said arm being provided at opposite sides of said pin with vertically extending screw-threaded bores, and a set of vertical adjusting screws provided in said bores and having their upper ends in supportable engagement with the lower edge of the stated door, whereby the latter may be vertically adjusted relative to said pin.
