Nrrn TA'IES ROBERT E. VAN GAMPEN, OF ASHT ABULA, OI'IIO.
DETACHABLE BACK FOR CARRIAGE-SEATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,750, dated December 23,1884.
Application filed October 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT VAN CAM- PEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backs for Carriage- Seats, being a Portable Oarriage-Seat Drop- Back; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in that class of backs for vehicles which are removable and can be secured to the skeleton or lazy back, so as to preserve the npholstering and permit such npholstering to be done in the shop, instead of in the vehicle.
The invention has for its objects to furnish acheap device and means for securing the removable back to the skeleton or lazy back, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents avertical sectional view of a carriage seat and back, showing my improved removable back applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the device for securing the removable back to the skeleton or lazy back, and Fig. 3 represents a seetional view of said device.
In the drawings, the letter A. indicates the of malleable iron and cast in one piece, for the purpose of economy and convenience.
The letter E indicates a metallic plate similar in size and shape to the plate D, but without the hook. This latter plate is provided with apertures e, for the purpose hereinafter explained. Two or more of the hooked and perforated plates are applied to the removable back, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the projections d on the plate D extending through suitable apertures in the removable back and through the apertures e in the plate E. The projections are riveted, so as to securely fasten the two plates to the back. The top rail, F, of the skeleton or lazy back is provided with recesses f, in which the hooks (I catch when the removable back is in place, so as to hold it in position. The lower portion of the removable back rests, when in position, against the lower portion of the permanent or skeleton or lazy back of the vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, with the lazy or skeleton back of a vehicle, provided with sockets or recesses at its upper edge, of the detachable back having plates provided with suitable hooks to fit in said sockets, the said plates being riveted to the removable back, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
' ROBERT E. VAN OAMIEN.
