Description

July 16, 1963 CS1-EINER 3,097,444
BooK HOLDER Filed Jan. 19, 1962 United States Patent Oce 3,097,444 BOOK HOLDER Charles Steiner, Long Island City, N.Y. (2S Sutton Place S., New York 22, N.Y.) Filed Jan. 19, 1962, Ser. No. 167,321 2 Claims. (Cl. 45--57) My invention relates `to book holders adapted to support books in the proper position to be read.
It is an object of my invention -to provide a new and improved book holder for holding a book in an `adjustable upright position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved book holder wherein the `angle at which a book is supported can be adjusted by changing Ythe location of an elastic or rubber band.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved book holder of the character indicated which `can be folded at for carrying or storage.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will either ybe explained or will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE l is `a perspective view of my invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross section through 2-2 of FIG- URE 1;
FIGURE 2a is a onoss section through Za--Za of FIG- URE 2 g FIG. 2b is a perspective view of my invention as shown in FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 3 is a cross section-a1 view of my invention shown with a different Iangle :of support for a book than that shown in FIGURE 2b;
FIGURE 3a is a cross section through 25a-43a of FIG- URE 3;
FIGURE v3b is a perspective view of my invention shown in FIGURE 3 I`FIGURE 4 -is a cross section through 4 4 of FIGURE 1; Iand FIGURE 5 is a pattern view of my invention as shown in the preceding figures.
Referring now to the figures, Ia rectangular sheet of corrugated card board or other light material comprises a plurality of joined sections 10, 12, 14, 16, 18- and 20 all foldable along lines of fold 22 which `are parallel to edges 24 and 26 of the sheet.
Two triangular flaps in the shape of right triangles 28 and 30 are secured to -the sheet along respective lines of .fold 32 and 34 which are perpendicular to edges 24 and 26.
Similarly, two rectangular iiaps in the shape of squares 36 and 38 are .also secured to the sheet along respective lines `of fold 32 land 34.
Opposite edges of section 14 are serrated Iat 40. Similarly, the hypotenuse of each of flaps 28 'and 30 is serrated at 42j.
To fold the holder into va position for holding a book, section 16 is placed in a vertical position; section 18 is placed in a horizontal position; and section 20 is also folded into a horizontal position `on top of section 18 leaving a horizontal slot 50.
3,097,444 Patented July 16, 1963 A portion of section 10 is fitted within slot 501, and section `12 is folded on top of -section 10 (both sections 10 and '12 are in a horizontal position). As a result, section 14 is held in a position inclining vertically downward from the top `of section 16 and can support a book 52 thereon.
Faps 36 and 38 fold horizontally under section 18. Clips 54 (which Kare removable) hold sections 18, 20, 10 and flaps 36 and 38 in posit-ion.
Triangular flaps 28 'and 30 are also `swung into vertical positions extending at right or acute angles with respect to section 16.
A rubber or elastic b-and 56 fitting in serrations 40 and 42 controls the book holding 'angle of section 14. By moving the band 56 to higher yor lower Serrat-ions and by swinging flaps 28 and 30 toward or away from section 14, this holding angle can be varied as necessary.
The entire sheet can be collapsed `and folded one section upon or adjacent another section to form a thin iiat structure easily carried or stored.
While my invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawings, it is to be understood that such -is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention which is best dcfined by the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
l. A Afoldable book holder comprising a rectangular sheet provided with first, second, third, fourth, and fifth joined rectangular sections which are fold-able along first, second, third Iand fourth separate parallel lines of fold which define said five joined sections, said lines be'mg parallel to two parallel edges of said sheet and perpendicular to the other two parallel edges of said sheet, the two edges of tsaid second section which are perpendicular to said lines being serrated, first and second rectangular sheet members, each member being secured to la correspending 'one of the two edges of said fourth section which are perpendicular to said lines, first and second right tri-agle sheet elements, one of said elements having one leg secured to one side of said first member Iand the other leg secured to one :edge Iof said third section which is perpendicular to said lines rin `such manner that the hypo- -tenuse of said one element extends between said one side of said first member and said second line, the other of said elements having one leg secured to one side of said second member Iand the other leg `secured to the other edge of said third section which is perpendicular to said lines in such manner that the hypotenuse of said other element extends between said one side of said second member and said second line.
2. A foldable book holder as set forth in claim l whereinthe hypotenuse of each of said first and second elements is serrated.
