Application filed J'unell,
, This inventionvrelates .to improvements "in folding tables or similar articles of the type adapted to be folded into compact forms.
An object of my invention is to provide a folding table, bench or seat in which the legs can be folded against the top or can be firmly held in an open position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a folding table or similar article wherein the legs may be maintained in a folded position against the top or may be maintained in an open condition.
Other objects more or less apparent will present themselves or will; be specific-ally pointed out in the description to follow.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a table or similar article embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same with the legs unfolded and the table set up;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same with the legs folded against the top;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a portion of a leg showing the manner in which the metallic supporting bars are attached to the legs;
Fig. 5 is asectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Referring to -the drawings, the letter A designates a top which may assume any suitable form and may be constructed in any suitable manner such as from a plurality of parallel boards 1 secured adjacent their ends by screws or other suitable means to cross members 2. Extending through the boards 1 and positioned in planes parallel-to the cross members 2, are two rods 3 and 4, the former having two supporting legs 5 pivotallyattached thereon adjacent its endsand, thelatter having two supporting legs 6 similarly attached thereto.
'The' two legs6 are maintained in a separated position from the two end boards 1 by spacing collars 7, while the other two legs 5 are positioned in contact with the edges of the said two end boards but separated from the nextadjacent two boards by similar spacing collars 8. Thus the two 'legs' 5 which ther apart than are the two legs 6 positioned adjacent collars 7.
Cross braces 9 are attached by screws to the edges of the legs 6 and similar cross braces 10 are attached to the edges of the legs 5,
- positions.

the said braces being adapted to maintain the ends of the legs in suitable supporting Suitably secured to and extending trans versely across the middle parts of those boards 1 which are positioned between the two end boards, isa brace member 11 having a pivoted cla'mping member 12 attached to its central part. I
-A U-shaped support 13 having its ends movably extending through the legs'5, is
adapted to extend across and rest against the underneath surface of boards 1 and against an edge of the brace member 11, thereby maintaining the said legs 5 in, a proper unfolded and supporting position.
7 Another U-shaped support 14 having its ends movably extending through the legs 6, is adapted to extend across and rest against the underneath surface of some of the boards 1 and against the opposite edge of-the brace member 11, thereby maintaining the said legs 6 in a proper unfolded and supportingposition. 7
. When it is desired to collapse the deviceor fold the legs, the U-shaped supports 13 and 14 are pulled downwardly until they are separated from the brace member 11, after which the legs 5 and 6 are moved inwardly until they are positioned parallel to and adjacent the two end boards 1 The U-shaped supports 13 and'14 are thereafter positioned against the top A, and the clamping member'12 is turned until its ends extendover the cross braces 9 and 10, thereby maintaining the legs, cross braces and U-shaped supports against the top A. A handle 15, secured to the outer edge of one of the end boards 1, serves as a means for conveniently carrying thedevice;
It is apparent to those skilled in the art that the various parts of my improved table or similar article may'be'constructed from any .suitable materials and may assume shapes ing in combination with a top having two pair of legs pivotally attached thereto, of a cross brace secured to each pair of legs, a brace member secured to the underneath side of the top, apair of U-shapedsupports each V top, a plnrality' of cross members seemed to V MARIO AMADUC OI.
