TABLE.
Application uea May 31, 1921. s au No. 473,918.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Enron G. lVALnINDnn, a citizen of, theUnited States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. 'Louisand State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. i Y T This invention relates to tables. and has special reference to one whichina'y be con veniently knocked down, rendering 'itinternittently useful for special occasions such as banquets, picnics, or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to produce as practical, durable and convenient a device of thischaracter as is possible. Other minor objects and advantages will appear in the further disclosure. Referring now to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters -indicate like parts: i j
Figure l is an underside perspective view of a table top showing a broken leg structure attached thereto. v
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the top of a adjacent one side thereof.
The invention resides in the novel -li'orin offoldable collapsible leg section and the manner oi? applying same to the under side of? a table top, the latter being either in single IfOl'IIl, or as a table having two sets of legs, or an indefinitely extendible table.
Each leg section comprises two pairs of legs, those of each pair being spaced apart by suitable cross bars 1 and 2, the legs being indicated at 3 and 4, and the bars are spaced inwardly from both the upper and lower ends of one pair of the legs, while in the other cooperative pair of legs the bar 1 extends transversely the upper ends of the legs and sightly therebeyond. vThis bar rests di-,
rectly upon the upper face of the bar 1 of the other pair of legs, while the bar 20f the latter pair oi legs rests upon the upper face of the bar 2 of the other pair of legs and. centrally of the cross bars thus engaged they are united by through pins or bolts 5, which result in two pairs of legsbeing pivotally united forming what isreferred to as a leg section and separable from the tabletop.
The uppermost crossbarl which extends beyond the legs is' bevelled'or inclined as at 6 and upon the under side of the table to which these legs are applied are fixed spaced cleats 7, they 'having'thei'r inner opposed faces inclined similar to that of theends 6 of'the cross bar I so that whenthe latter is brought in contact with the under side of the table top in'a position'diagonally to the straight line of thecleats 7 and turned upon its pivotal bolt 5 until at right angles with the cleats the inclined ends of thecross bar will be wedged in under the inclined edges of the cleats and' thus securely held. This it is understood can only occur after the upwardly extending ends of the other pair of legs are positioned outside of two straight. edgedcleatsS and 9, properly spaced from each other diametrically opposite to the cleats and the upper ends of this pair of legs are slotted as atlO'to provide certain elasticity theretofor the tight andsnug fitting thereof over the cleats, and the outer lower corner 'ofthe latter. maybe slightly i rounded or bevelled to-assist in such snug fitting.
When a leg section is thus fastened to the under side of a table it is quite obvious that the same forms an admirable, staunch sup port for the table top and one that may be quickly and conveniently adjusted 'to or from the table.
When. it is desired to provide for an ex: tension table, that is where aplurality of tops are used in conj unotion with a suitable number of leg sections, each table top is provided with an extra transverse cleat l1 spaced from the end ofthe table just onehalf the width of the bar 1 of the leg section the. ends of which are inclined and the spacing of the cleats 8 and 9 from the cleat 11 are such that when the leg section is applied to the abutting ends of two table tops as in Figure 3 the legs having resilient ends will occur back oi the cleats 9, thus forming a holding union with same to prevent longitudinal movement of the tops and the wedging cleat will occur intermediate of the manner as heretofore described, thus producing a substantial extension table of any I desired length. r
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by 'LQll",
ters Patent, is: 1. A collapsible extension table of the character described comprislng a plurality of individually complete table tops, groups of cleats upon the under side of each table top adjacent the ends thereof, detachable 'foldable leg sections each comprising four legs, and means whereby'certain leg sections may be cooperatively united with certain of the cleats adjacent the abutting ends ofthe table'tops for cooperatively supporting and holding said tops together and other of the leg sections engageable with cleats at the opposite ends of the table tops. a r 2; A table ofthe character described comprising a top having a group offour-cleat's fastened to the under sideth ereof, two oi said opposed cleats having leg engaging sides straight and a at rlght angles to the bottom of the table top, theother two of said opposed cleats having straight leg enf gaging faces incllned'at an acute angle to the table top a detachable leg section comprising "a pair of foldably unitedlegs'the upper opposed ends ot two ofiwhich are beveled for cooperative engagement wlth the inclined cleats," and the other two opposed upper ends-of the leg sectlon overlapping the straight: sided cleats, substantially as described. I v i j A table of the character described comprising atop having a group of'four cleats rigidly fixed to the under side thereof, a
detachable leg section comprising a pair of foldably united legs, means at the upper ends of one pair of legs for overlapping eng gement With two of the spaced cleats and means upon the upper ends of the other'pair of legs whereby the leg section may be securely. attached to the table top .by a rotative actionof one pair or" the legs in the section. j
4:.An extendible table of the character described vcomprising a plurality of elon gatedindividually complete tops, groups of spaced leg engaging cleats upon the under side of each top and adjacent, theends thereof," detachable foldable leg sections having means for cooperative wedging engagement with two of the opposedspaced cleats and overlapping engagement withthe other opposedcleats in each group, an additional transverse cleat adjacent each end of each top but spaced sufficiently therefrom to receive thefwedging member of one of the leg sections therebetweenwhen two of the table tops abut and the oppositeleg members overlap the outermost cleats of the groups to form a cooperative leg support for the abutting ends of the table tops.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: I
