Description

March 10; 1931.
G. A, TURNER BOOK SUPPORT Filed D60. 3 1929 Inventor A flo'rnell V Patented Mar. 10, 1931 UNITED STATES GEORGE ALEXANDER TURNER, OF ALBANY, GEOBGIA' BOOK SUPPORT Application filed December 3, 1929. Serial No. 411,310.
The present invention relates to book supports adapted for supporting a row of books in upright position, either upon a shelf or library table and has for its princlpal ob ect to provide a supporting device of this character which is reversible and may be used at either the right or left hand side of the row of books.
A further object of the invention is to pro- 1 vide a book support of this character which is constructed from a sheet metal blank and bent into the desired shape to engage one side as well as one edge of the endmost book and is further provided with a base portion adapted to slide under the bottom edge of the book.
A still further object is to provide an article of this character of a simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted to the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing the support in position,
Figure 2 is a top plan view,
Figure 3 is a perspective view,
Figure l is a sectional View taken substantially along a line 4-4 of Figure 3, I
Figure 5 is a plan View of one of the blanks from which the support is formed.
Referring now to the drawings in detail for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed the invention as being formed from a sheet metal blank indicated generally at 5 having sides of substantially equal length and with the corners rounded as shown at 6.
Near one edge of the blank a square shaped opening 7 is cut out, the opening being arranged so that two of its corners will be in alinement with the longitudinal center line of the blank. The blank is then folded along the longitudinal center line shown by the dot ted line 8 and also along a line at right angles to said center line, the second named fullline,
indicated at 9, passing through the remain) ing corners of the opening 7. v 1
By referring to Figure 5 of the drawing it will be seen that the fold'lines 8 and 9 divide the blank sheet 5 into a pair of relatively large sections 10 and a pair of relatively small sections 11, each of said sections embracing one of the corners of the sheet.
When folding the larger sections 10 into a position at right angles with respect to each other and also folding the sheet along the line 9, it will be apparent that a portion of the smaller section 11 must overlie each other which is accomplished by folding a portion of one of said smaller sections along the line indicated at 12. The overlapping portions of the sections 11 are then permanently secured by means of a rivet 13 or the like. 7
When folded in the manner indicated the sheet of material will comprise a book support embodying a base 14 which is composed of the sections 11 and upright sections 15 which are composed of thelarge sections 10. The base 14 may then be inserted under the lower edge of the outermost of a row of books indicated by the dotted lines at 16, the lower corner of the book being adapted to enter the opening 7 and with one of the upright sections 15 extending across the front edge of the book while the other of said upright extension extends along the side of the book.
In this manner the books will be supported in upright position and assist in bracing the cover of the book from sagging.
By reference to Figure 2 of the drawings it will be apparent that the support may be placed upon either the right or left hand side of a row of books.
It is obvious that my invention is suscepti ble to Various changes and modifications in construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A book support comprising a pair of up- I right sections disposed at right angles to each other and having their lower corners formed with an opening for receiving the lower corner of a book and a base connecting the lower edges of saicupright section.
2. A book support formed of sheet material having a square-shaped opening adjacent one edge, said material being folded along lines extending through the opposite corners of said opening whereby to provide a pair of sections disposed at right angles to each other for positioning along one edge and one side respectively of a book and with the adjacent corner of the book inserted in said opening and a base at the lower edges of said sections for inserting under the book.
3; A book support formed of sheet materail having a square-shaped opening adjacent one edge, said material being folded along lines extending through the opposite corners of said opening whereby to provide a pair of sections disposed at right angles to each other for positioning along one edge and one side respectively of a book and with the adjacent corner of the book inserted in said opening, and a base rigidly connecting the lower edges of said sections for inserting under the book.
4. A book support formed of sheet material having a square shaped opening adjacent one edge and said material being folded along lines at right angles to each other and passing through opposite corners of the opening whereby to form the material into pairs of relatively large and small sections, said large sections being disposed in upright position at the edge and one side respectively of a book with the corner of the book inserted in said opening and said smaller sections being one upon the other and positioned under the book and fastening means permanently securing the overlapped edges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE ALEXANDER TURNER.
