CAR-COUPLING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,653, dated December 23, 1884-.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AARON L. SANDERS, of Falcon, in the county of McNairy and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Car-Ooupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention consists of the combinations of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of two of my improved car-couplings, a link being held in one and entering the other. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

The draw-head A is provided in its top with a longitudinal slot, in which a piece, B, is pivoted, the rear end of which is pressed upward by a spring, 0, placed below it, whereby the outer or front end is pressed against the end of the slot, and which end of the piece B is provided with a transverse check-pin, l), to prevent it from being pressed down too far.

On the upper surface of the piece 13 a stapie or hook, E, is secured at the outer end, in which staple or hook a chain or cord, F, is secured, which chain or cord passes over a suitable pulley, E, and has its upper end secured to a lever, F, on the roof of the car; or the said chain can be connected with levers extending to the sides of the car. A longitudinal slot, G, is formed in the piece B at the front end. In the draw-head a couplingpin tumbler, H, is pivoted at its angle, one shank having a slot, J, and the other forming a hook, K. Through the slot J a bar, an,

- passes, which is supported by spiral springs n, and forms a support and guide for the link. A spring-strip, L, is secured over a slot or recess, M, in the bottom of the drawhead, and rests against the bottom edge of the couplingpin tumbler and holds the couplingpin tumbler in place. When a draw-head does not contain alink, the couplingpin tumbler H is in the position shown in Fig. 1, on the left-hand side. As the link P enters, its end strikes the hook K and swings the slot ted shank or arm upward and through the link. The free end of the said slotted shank strikes against the outer end of the piece B and swings it up, and the end of the slotted shank passes into the slot G in the piece B,

and the cars are thus coupled, as shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 1.

If the cars are to be uncoupled, the upper end of the piece B must be raised to release the upper end of the slotted shank, and as the link is drawn out of the mouth of the drawhead it swings down the slotted shank of the tumbler. The front ends of the pieces B can be raised either by means of the cords or chains F, or by any other suitable means. The thickness of the link preferably increases from the middle toward the ends. The coup ling-pin tumbler H is preferably provided with a shoulder, 0, on each side of the slotted shank to form supports for the link.

In place of using the spring L a spiral spring can be used, one end of which is to be secured on the draw-head and the other end secured to the coupling-pintumbler at the angle in such a manner as always to hold the coupling-pin tumbler in place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a ear-coupling, the combination, with the draw head having disposed in its bottom a spring, L, of the pivoted coupling-hook tumbler H, with either of two sides resting upon said spring, substantially as and for thepun pose set forth.

2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the pivoted hook-tumbler H, having a slot, J, of the link-guide pin m, held under the action of a spring, and movable in the slot J as the hook-tumbler is actuated, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the link 1, of the pivoted coupling-hook tumbler H, with one arm provided with shoulders 0 at a plane above its pivotal point or the bottom of the draw-head to support the link, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head A, having in its bottom the fiat spring L and in its top the slotted springlever B, of the pivoted coupling-hook tumbler H, with either of two sides resting upon the spring L, and the link-guiding bar m, connected to a spring, a, and movable in the slot J of the tumbler H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
