F. 0. LYNN. GAR COUPLING.
JZIFN'TOR:
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
v FRANK O. LYNN, OF NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND AMON W. GEIGER, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,908, dated November 21, 1882. Application filed October 12, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK O. LYNN, of Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved (Jar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The inventionconsists in the combination, with a draw-head having a hook formed at its end, of a spring which presses the draw-head in the direction toward the open side of the hook, and of loop-frames formed on the top. and bottom of the draw-head, whereby two such draw-heads can catch on each other or on the loop-frames, accordingly as the draw-heads are at the same .or different elevations above tLe track.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective-view of myim proved car-couplin g, showing it attached to a car. Fig.
2 is a plan view of the under side of the same,
showing two, draw-heads coupled.
The draw-head A, which is pivoted to the under side of the car-bottom to swing on the horizontal plane, isprovided at its free end with a hook, B. The outer end of the drawhead is beveled or rounded ofi toward the short prong of the hook, andis provided with a horizontal recess, 0, adapted to receive a couplinglink, and with pin-apertures D. Bows or loopt'rames E project from the'top and bottom of the draw-head, near the end, the outer side or shanks of the said frames being vertical. A spring, K, secured to the car-body rests against the side of the draw-head and presses the same catch and engage with each other.
in the direction toward the open side of the draw-head hook. A rod, H, is attached to the draw-head and to the lower end of a lever, J, 0 pivoted on the end of the car, by means of which lever J and rod H the draw-head can be drawn or moved in the inverse direction of that in which it is pressed by the spring K.
The operation is as follows: When the drawheads come together the beveled ends strike againsteach other and are moved laterally from each other. When the endsof the short prongs of the hooks have passed each other the drawheads snap toward each other, and the books 0 As shown in Fig. 2, when the draw-heads are at difi'erent elevations above the tracks the hooks catch on the frames projecting from the topsand bottoms of the draw-heads.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the draw-head A, provided with a hookhead, B, of the spring K and the loop-framesE on the top and bottom of the draw-head, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-head A, provided with a hook-head, B,of the spring K, the loop-frames E in the top and bottom of the draw-head, the rod H, and the lever J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
FRANK o LYNN.
