' NITEID STATES PATENT Grrron.
IMPROVEMENT IN Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,545, dated December 8, 1874 October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN G. SAUSERMAN and GEORGE W. ANTHONY, of Newport, in the county of Perry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Oar- Ooupling, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our improved carcoupling, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to an improved automatic car-coupling which may be used for cars with platforms of different heights, and also in connection with the common pin-and-link coupling separating readily when any car is thrown off the track.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents a draw-head, with curved face-plates and mouth of suitable size for the entrance of the coupling-link B. Link B is formed in the shape of an arrow, with spear-shaped head and wider slotted rear part, that is coupled by a strong vertical pin, 0, passing through perforations of the drawhead whenever it is desired that the link shall project far enough to couple with the adjoining draw-head. The retention of the link B in this position is secured by means of its concaved rear end, which rests against a second lighter pin, 0, being placed at suitable distance back of coupling-pin O. The middle V part of the link is acted upon by the roundedoif jaws D of vertical lever-frames D, which are fulcrumed sidewise of pin O and firmly pressed against the link by strong springs E, applied to the rear arms of lever-frames E. The entering spear-head of the link strikes' CAR-COUPLINGS.
; application filed against the jaws D, forces them sidewise till the head has passed the same, when they look firmly on the link and couple the same.
When both cars to be coupled are provided with this coupling, the linkof one draw-head is set back by placing the pins 0 0 inside of the slotted part, and carrying thereby the head so far back that only the farther projecting link of the other draw-head, which is set to the main piece and rests against the rear pin, couples with theapproaching draw-head.
WVhen linkB has to couple with the common pin-and-link coupling, the slotted end is attached by the same, while the spear-head enters the jaws, as described.
The uncoupling is produced by chains, levers, or rods attached to the jaws-and connected to the platform, top, or side of the car by any one of the usual and approved appliances for this purpose, provided that a suflicient spreading of the jaws for the detaching of the link is obtained.
The link uncouples automatically when the car is thrown off the track, as, by the change from the horizontal to the vertical position, the spear-head may readily slip out between the jaws, while the oblong mouth of the draw-head admits the convenient coupling of cars having platforms of different heights.
Having thus described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Y The link 13, having slotted and concaved rear part, in combination with the main and rear pins 0 O, for being steadily retained in position, as specified.
