CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,633,,dated March 31, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batesville, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Car- Coupling, of which the following s a specification.
This invention relates to car-couplings; and the object of the same is to effect improvements upon couplings of this same general character heretofore constructed.
To this end the invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figurel is an elevation of the end of a boxcar, showing my improvements as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the draw-head in its normal position without the link. Fig. 3 is a similar section with the pin raised to release the link and the link supported by the link-lifter. Fig. 4 is'a similar section showing the linklocked in position and under tension.
Referring to the said drawings, the letter O designates the body of the car, below which is arranged a draw-head I which is of the ordinary construction, except as hereinafter specified. Mounted in eyes H in the ends of the car-body is a horizontal rod h, having depending ends h and anupwardly-extending handle 7L2. Depending from this rod is a lever K,'which is connected with the pin J in a manner hereinafter described, and connected to the end of the car is a spring M, preferably of the construction shown, which bears upon the lever K and forces it normally inward.
g is. a cleat secured to the end of the car, and pivotally mounted on a pin G therein is a lever 2', one of whose ends is connected by a chain S with an eye P in the top of the draw-head. By this means an operator standing by the side of the car can manipulate the lever '11 to raise and lower the draw-head for the purpose of guiding the link 'into the mouth of an approaching draw-head.
Pivotally mounted on a horizontal bolt S through the draw head is the link-lifter D, which is of the shape shown in the drawings.
In eyes 0 in the bottom of the draw-head is mounted a bar E, around which are passed the coils of a springF, whose free end presses downwardlyon the rear end of the link-lifter and throws its front end upwardly. Said front end is provided with a notch N, whose rear approach a is beveled, as shown, and the notch passes over a square bar Q, which is seated through the draw-head. The spring F causes the front end of the link-lifter to be normally raised, as above stated, and the link T is therefore normally held in direct alignment with the draw-head, as shown in Fig. 3, exceptunder conditions hereinafter stated.
The letter J designates the pin, which is of L shape, pivoted at its angle on a bolt Q, passing transversely through the draw-head, and the upper end of this pin is connected by a link L with the lower end of the depending lever K. By reason of the fact that the spring M bears this depending lever K to the rear the upper end of the link J is also borne in that direction and the lower end thereof normally thrown downward through the link.

pin is turned to the rear on its pivot Q and the link-lifter D is slightly depressed.

cording as the exigencies of the case may deceases the link-lifter will rise and the link will be rigidly held, as shown in-Fig. 3. I11 a car-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head loosely supported beneath the car, a lever pivoted to the end of the ear, and a chain connecting said lever with the draivhead, of a pin pivoted in said draw-head, a shaft journaled across the end of the car and carrying operating-handles, a lever connected to and depending from said shaft, and a link connecting said lever with the pin substantially as described.
