Definitions
- This invention relates to a window construction prefer-ably for use in buildings, which may be subjected to very much sunshine and the object of the invention is to provide means bywhichit is possibl e lo cut-olf an esseptial part of the heat radiation from the hine and to reestablish the transparencfif'thdwifidovW'"" It is a further object of the invention to provide such a window with means by which a material capable of refiectingan essential part of the 'heat radi 'on may easily be placed inithefsp'ac between twoplatfes oft ransparent material formingth indowand also to provide means for displacing said material from said space.
- the fundamental features of the invention consist in the provision of a chamber along one horizontal side of the frame, said chamber containing an easy-running granulate, the window construction being further provided with means for transferring the granulate from the chamber to the space and vice versa.
- the drawing shows a part of a window suspended in a fixed wallframe 1 and comprising a windowframe 2 enclosing two closely spaced panes 3 and 4, a pair of grooves 5 and 6 being provided on the inside of the major part of the frame for receiving the edges of the panes 3 and 4 while a rib 7 is provided between these grooves to provide the predetermined spacing of the panes 3' and 4.
- the window also comprises an extra pane 8 positioned in the frame 2 by means of a groove 9 formed between the frame 2 itself and a last 10, the groove 9 receiving the edge of the pane 8.
- a pivot fitting 11 On the frame 2 is a pivot fitting 11 receiving a pivot pin 12 carried by a tapsocket 13 which in turn is secured to the fixed wallframe 1. Only one of these pivoting arrangements is shown in the drawing but a corresponding arrangement is of course provided on the opposite side of the frames 1 and 2.
- the upper edges of the glass panes 3- and 4 extend upwardly into a chamber 14 in the upper part of the frame 2. Between the glass pane 3 and the frame 2 is clamped a flap 15 the free portion of which overhangs the upper edges of the panes 3 and 4, and along the free edge of this flap 15 a rod 16 is attached in order to increase the weight of the flap 15.
- the outer edge of the flap 15 or the rod 16 is connected by means of a cord 17 with the free end of an arm 18 the other end of which is fixed to a pivoting rod 19 extending through a packing 20 to the outside of the frame 2, where it is connected to an anm 21 the free end of which is pivotally connected with a rod 22 terminating at its lower end in a handle 23.
- the chamber 14 contains a granulate or the like such as small glass beads 24 and when the rod 22 is pulled the pivoted rod 19 is turned to move the arm 18 upwardly whereupon the flap 15 is lifted and the glass beads slide Patented May 28, 1963 downwardly into the space between the two glass panes 3 and 4.
- a granulate or the like such as small glass beads 24 and when the rod 22 is pulled the pivoted rod 19 is turned to move the arm 18 upwardly whereupon the flap 15 is lifted and the glass beads slide Patented May 28, 1963 downwardly into the space between the two glass panes 3 and 4.
- the chamber 14 is closed at the top by a resilient wall 25 fastened to the inside of the chamber by means of flanges 26 and 27.
- the resilient wa-ll serves the purpose of equalization of varying pressures arising as a result of temperature variations in the air contained in the space between the glass panes 3 and 4 and in the chamber itself, and to allow such equalization the frame 2 has a hole 28 connecting the space above the resilient wall 25 with the outside air. This insures that no air can enter the space comprising the chamber and the space between the glass panes 3 and 4, and thus by initially drying the air in this space any formation of condensed moisture is obviated. Means for absorbing moisture may also be placed in the chamber.
- the window When the glasssbcads fill up the space between the glass panes Sand 4 the window will have the appearance of frosted glass such as sandblasted glass and although this somewhat reduces the passage of visible light this loss of light is not of any signifiance and generally an advantage in the case of direct radiation from the sun.
- the window provides a diffused light and at the samg/ 25' time reduces substantially the passage of heatrays.
- the removal of the granulate from the space between the glass panes 3 and 4 may be conveniently achieved as by a pumping device which conveys the material to the chamber 14, for example, through a duct in the frame 2.
- a window construction comprising at least two plates of transparent material placed generally parallel to one another and defining a space therebetween, an airtight window frame disposed around said plates and pivotally mounted in a wall frame for movement into different vertical positions, a chamber extending along one horizontal side of said frame, an easy running granulate in said chamber in sufiicient quantity for filling said space between said plates and passage means permitting the transfer of said granulate from said chamber to said space and from said space to said chamber, said passage means comprising a longitudinal slot defined in said frame and extending substantially the full length of said horizontal side and including means for opening and closing said passage means.
