-W'. J. WORLEY.
I GLOVE. No. 308,863. Patented Dec. 2,1884.
' WITNESSES INVENTOR L 40%; .h
I w. I a J hwaa w ra'rns IVE SLEY J. IVORLEY, OF KEOKUK, IOVA.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,863, dated December 2, 1884:.
Application filed October 6, 1883.
To all whom, it may concern:
Beitknown that I, WnsLnY JOHN WoRLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure I shows the front of the glove. Fig. II shows side of part of a finger with pads thereon.
The object of this invention is to make a special glove for brick-layers use. For this use an article is required which will supply three requirements which, it is believed, have never been provided for by any article be fore. These are, that there shall be pads to protect the balls of the fingers and thumb from wear on the brick, that these pads shall be held securely in place in use, and that the portions between the fingers shall be thin and flexible, so as not to crowd the fingers apart, nor impede their flexibility as required for dexterity and skill.
The other parts of the invention consist in practical details in carrying out such device.
I make the glove of any suitable thin and flexible material. I use woolen, cotton, silk, or other material which may be knit or woven and in one fabric throughout, or of parts united, which parts may be alike or different in the various portions. For summer use I prefer thin open material. The spaces between the fingers, as at A, I make very thin and flexible. I also make the backs of the fingers very flexible, and use thin fabric for the backing of the fronts of the fingers, so that the fingers shall not be crowded apart by the thickness of fabric between them or made clumsy by want of flexibility. The
fronts and ends of the balls of the fingers and (No model.)
little, to reach beyond the heavy wear and U form an even finish, as well as to make these parts elastic on their edges and avoid liability to pull off of the backing in use. I attach these added parts or pads by means of rubber paste or other suitable means; and these parts are formed and prepared in any suitable way according to the rubber-workers or other suitable art, as by molding and vulcanizing, so that the same will be permanent in its character, and suitably soft and flexible and durable for the purpose.
Some of the parts may be modified in form or character for this purpose and for kindred uses.
I claim 1. A glove adapted to bricklayers use, formed of fibrous fabric and provided with rubber pads or facings added thereto on the balls of the fingers and thumb and made thin and flexible between the fingers.
2. A glove having its parts formed of fibrous fabric'and provided with facings of rubber or other suitable material added thereto on faces exposed to wear, which added facings have their edges made thin and flexible.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
w. J. WORLEY. XVitnesses:
JOHN R. DIMOND, J OHN S. MoCoY.
