STAM P-CANCELER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,814, dated December 2, 1884.
Application filed February 27, 1S84. (Model.)
cancelers in which a block or'plate having an.
abrading-surface is guided in the head ot' the device and acted upon by a cam on the yielding handle, the object of our invention being to so construct a canceler of this class as to' apply the force as directly as possible to the abrading-block, and thus insure the positive movement of the same necessary for the proper cancellation of the stamp.`
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a stamp-canceler constructed in accordance with our invention, Fig. 2, an elevation of saine, partly in section; Fig. 3, a sectional plan view on the line l 2, Fig. l; Fig. 4, a transverse section of the lower portion of Fig. 1 on the line 3 4L, and Figs. 5 and 6 inverted plan views of the device with the abradingblock in different positions.
The canceler has a hollow head, c, secured to and projecting upward from which is the shank b, and guided on the upper end of the latter is the knob or handle a, connected to the upper end of the central stein, c', the lower end of which is guided in an opening in the head c, and is secured to ablock, e, contained within the hollow head. This block e has a beveled face, which bears `against the correspondingly-beveled upper face of a block, f, guided on abolt, g, which extends across the hollow head, and has a threaded end adapted to a similarlythreaded opening in one side of said head, so that it can be readily removed when it is desired to detach the parts of the canceler for any purpose. When the knob of the canceler is grasped in the hand and the head pressed down upon the face of an envelope, the knob will yield and the block e will be depressed by the stein c', so that its beveled face, acting on the beveled face of the block f, will cause the latter to move longitudinally from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that shown in Fig. 5; and as the lower face of 5o .froin the knob a, the latter is elevated by the action of the spiral spring` k, surrounding the ste-ni a. order lo move the block f and cause its toothed face to cut through the stamp; hence we apply the power to said block as directly as possible by connecting the canrblock c to the lower end of the stein ci', the force being applied directly to the upper end of said stein.
Withoutclaiming, broadly, therefore, a stainp-canceler in which an abrading-block is caused to rnove laterally across the face of the stanip by the action of abeveled cani,we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the hollow head c and its shank b, the transverse bolt g, the block f, guided thereon, having a toothed lower face and a beveled top, the springs 7i and k, the knob a, having a stein, c', and abeveledblock, c, secured to the lower end of said stein and acting upon the beveled top ofthe blockf, as set forth. l
