WHEEL DOG.

This invention relates to clamping devices and pertains more particularly to a car wheel dog or clamp.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a car wheel clamp of light but strong and durable construction and adapted to be quickly placed in operative position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wheel clamp in a unitary structure and thereby eliminating the possibility of inisplacii'ig or losing portions of the device.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 shows the device embodying the present invention, in perspective and in ap plied position.
Figure 2 is a vie-w in side elevation of the clamp, portions thereof being in section for clearer illustration.
Figure 3 is a face view of the clamp with the plate over a spring chamber removed.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the structure.
Figure 5 is the cross section taken upon the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of a railway car wheel support-ed upon the track 2 which in turn is mounted on the usual tie 3. The car truck structure, a portion of which is indicated by the'numeral 4, carries the usual packing and bearing box 5 into which the tion of the shank has the right angularly extending body formed integral therewith as indicated at 11 which body is provided with the passage 12 which extends therethrough along the inner face of the shank 6. The outer end of this body 11 has the relatively shallow upstanding casing or shell 13 formed integral therewith which is open on the side remote from the shank 6 to receive a helical spring 14. A plate 15 is provided to be secured over the open face of the casing 13 to retain the spring 14 in position therein. The rear wall of the casing 13 is provided with the longitudinally extending slot 16 for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Slidable through the passage 12 in the body 11 and against the inner face of the shank 6 is a rack 17 provided in that face lying against the shank with the teeth 18. The lower end of the shank is formed to provide the head jaw 19 having the under surface thereof toothed as indicated at 20 for engagement with the car wheel, as will be later described. The forward face of the rack 17 has secured therein the pin 21 which projects through the slot 16 into the spring casing and beneath the spring 14 with which it has contact.
Pivotally mounted between the ears 10 upon the pivot pin 22 is the head end 23 of the rack operating lever 24, the peripheral surface of the head 23 being provided with a rack engaging tooth 25 for the purpose hereinafter described.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there is provided a fixed and a movable jaw member and when the device is to be placed in operation the lever 24 is swung upwardly and held in a raised position by hand to move the engaging tooth 25 into the recess 26 out of the path of the rack 18 which permits movement of the rigid rack 17. The head or movable jaw 19 is now engaged over the flange of the car wheel 1 and the clamp forced downwardly separating the jaws 7 and 19 against the tension of the spring 14 until the same are sufficiently far apart to permit the jaw 7 to engage beneath the head of the track 2. The spring 14 then acts to move the jaws 7 and 19 toward one another to grip the track head and wheel flange between the same and the lever 24 is released, which permits the same to swing down by gravit to move the tooth 25 in en gages-wet with an adjacent reek teeth 18.
\Vith the clamp in the foregoing described position a jack 27 is then mounted on the adjacent tie 3 beneath the box 5 and the head 28 thereof is raised against the box. The wheel 1 will be lifted slightly from the track 2 thereby raising the rack 17 and causing the tooth to move with the rack teeth 18 swinging the lever 24. down until the same abuts the clamp shank 6 as shown in Figure It will be readily seen that further movement upward of the car wheel will be prevented and the box can be raised to the desired position to permit the desired work to be done thereon.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A car wheel clamp of the character de scribed, comprising a body shank, a fixed jaw carried at one end of said shank, a shiftable jaw carrying member carried by said shank and movable thereon relative to said fixed jaw, means for normally urging said movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, and a shift able locking means carried by the shank and designed to engage the shii'table jaw carrying member under certain conditions, to pre vent the same from moving away from the fixed 2. In a car wheel clamp of the character described, a shank, a fixed jaw member projecting laterally from one end of said shank, a rack member slidable longitudinally otone face of said shank, a jaw carried by said rack for coaction with said fixed jaw, a resilient element carried by the shank and normally acting upon said rack to force the same toward said fixed jaw, and a pivoted latch member carried by said shank and normally engaging said rack to prevent outward movement thereof away from the fixed jaw.
3. A car wheel clamp comprising an elongated shank body, a lateral extension at one end of said body formed to provide a rigid jaw member, a guide at the opposite end of said shank, a rack member slidable through said guide longitudinally of the shank, a jaw member carried by said rack and movable relative to said first mentioned jaw for coaction therewith, means to provide a spring housing adjacent said guide, a spring member within said housing normally acting on said rack to force the same toward said first mentioned jaw, and a pivoted latch member designed to automatically engage the said rack when the same is shifted away from the rack jaw to prevent outward movement of the rack with respect to the shank carried jaw.

5. A car wheel clamp comprising a shank having a recess, a rigid jaw on one end of said shank, a rack bar movable longitudinally of the shank having a jaw, spring means urging the jaws toward one another, a weight operated lever pivoted to the shank, a tooth on said lever for engaging the rack bar movable into the recess and out of the path of the teeth of the rack bar when the lever is in a raised position, and a stop for limiting the downward swinging movement of said lever.
