Description

March 12, 1963 T. J. REDD GOLF CLUB Filed July 6, 1959 United States Patent 3,081,087 GOLF CLUB Thomas Jefferson Redd, 4435 S. Lewis Ave., Tulsa 5, Okla. Filed July 6, 1959, Ser. No. 824,997 1 Claim. (Cl. 273-80) My invention relates to improvements in golf clubs and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a club of rectilinear shape for better aiming of the ball, second, to provide a club which is mechanically balanced with respect to the center line of the shaft, third, to provide a club with two equal club faces in opposite disposition that the club may be used as .a right handed club or as a left handed club with equal facility, fourth, to provide a club with the center part of each face coincident with the center line of the shaft so that when the ball is struck there will be no torque felt by the player, fifth, to provide a club wherein the pin attaching head to shaft is entirely concealed, and sixth, to provide a club wherein the shaft is attached to the head by internal threaded means eliminating the pin altogether.
I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the following drawings.
FIGURE 1 is a cross section of a golf club showing the improvement of a concealed attaching pin. FIGURE 2 is a cross section of agolf club showing the improvement of assembly using an internal threaded means instead of a pin. FIGURE 3 is a cross section of the blade of the club showing the tapered hole and flat upper deck which forms the rectangular aiming surface.
In the drawings in FIGURE 1, item 1 is the golf shaft, 2 is the shank showing a grooved enlargement to receive a pin retaining ring, 3 is the retained pin fixing the head to the shaft, 4 is a retaining ring, 5 is a tapered hole in the blade for establishing mechanical balance around the center line of the shaft, 6 is a rectangular top surface of 11116 blade of considerable width to facilitate aiming the stro e.
In FIGURE 2, item 1 is the golf shaft, 7 is the shank showing the internal threaded means for attaching the shaft to the head, 8 is a tapered shoulder receiving the end of the shaft, item 9 is a threaded hole in the shank, 10 is the attaching bolt engaging 9, and 11 is a shoulder inside the shaft receiving head of attaching bolt 10.
3,081,087 Patented Mar. 12, 1963 "ice FIGURE 3 shows a cross section of the blade wherein may be discerned the approximate width of top surface 6, and tapered balancing hole 5.
By virtue of the mechanical balance inherent in the design of this golf club, a player experiences no torque during the swing or at the moment the ball strikes the center of the club face. By providing a blade with rectangular top surface the ball may be aimed with maximum facility, uncompounded by any clubhead outlines not in agreement with the desired flight of the ball. In the novel means of attaching the shaft to the clubhead, a union of great mechanical strength and artistic beauty is attained.
In accordance with the provision of the patent statutes I have described the principle of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means. 7
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is:
In a golf club, a shaft, a shank, said shaft being aflfixed to said shank near one end of said shank, a club head, said club head being attached near its heel to said shank opposite that end receiving said shaft, said shank extending upwardly from the top of said club head adjacent the heel thereof .and being bent so that the center line of the outer end of said shank .and of said shaft extends toward the central part of said club head, said club head having a longitudinal passage convergent toward the toe of said club head whereby the center of gravity of said club head is disposed nearer the toe of said club head than the heel thereof and said club head and said shank are balanced about the center line of said shaft.
