United States Patent 3,397,888 ADJUSTABLE GOLF PUTTER Donald R. Springer, 7609 NE. Rodney Ave. 97211, and James E. Lyons, Jr., 1600 N. Colfax St. 97217, both of Portland, Oreg.
Filed July 16, 1965, Ser. No. 472,408 Claims. (Cl. 273-801) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A golf club wherein a threaded shaft can be selectively attached to any one of a series of threaded openings on adjacent side and edge faces of a rectangular club head.
This invention relates to golfing putters.
It is the general purpose of the present invention to provide a golfing putter characterized by the following attributes:
(l) interchangeably adaptable for use as a right hand or left hand putter.
(2) interchangeably adaptable for use as a mallet type or blade type putter.
(3) Adjustable with respect to balance, center of gravity and heft to suit the user.
(4) Provided with square edges to assist in aligning.
the ball.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation, partly in section;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view in end elevation, partly in section; and
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary plan yiew, of the herein described golfing putter.
The golfing putter of my invention is characterized by the inclusion of a novel head which is characterized by being elongated and substantially rectangular, allowing for slight deviations, along both its longitudinal and transverse axes. The putting head may be made of brass or other suitable, heavy corrosion resistant material. It is provided with opposed edge faces 12, opposed side faces 14 and opposed end faces 16.
Along its adjacent side and top edge faces 14, 12 there are provided longitudinally arranged, centrally located, series of openings 18, 20, respectively. These openings may be formed by drilling and tapping the head at uniform intervals along substantially its entire length.
The securing means provided for securing the head to the handle comprises a bolt, indicated generally at 24. The bolt is formed in two sections.
The inner section 26 is unthreaded and dimensioned for a press fit inside the bore of hollow handle 22. There it may be secured by transversely arranged pins 28, 30 penetrating the handle and the bolt at substantially 90 to each other.
The outer section 32 of the bolt is threaded for reception in a selected one of drilled and tapped openings 18, 20 in the putter head. It mounts a locking nut 34.
It will be observed that connecting bolt 24 is bent angularly so that its respective sections 26, 32 are disposed at an angle to each other which determines the angle of handle 22 to head 10.
To assemble the putter, the smooth end 26 of bolt 10 is inserted in the bore of handle 22 and pins 28, 30 pressed in place. A plastic sleeve 36 then is placed over the lower 3,397,888 Patented Aug. 20, 1968 part of the handle, concealing the pins and imparting to the putter handle a conventional appearance.
When the golfer uses the putter, he selects one of openings 18, 20 in accordance with Whether he is right handed or left handed, and whether he wishes to met a blade type or mallet type putter. If the former, he inserts the threaded projecting end of bolt 24 into one of threaded openings 20; if the latter, he uses instead one of openings 18. Which particular opening of either series he uses, will be determined by the balance and heft he prefers. For purposes of practice and experimentation, the golfier may attach the head in various positions until he discovers the position which suits best his taste and skill.
Still further, when using the club, instead of attempting the diflicult feat of aligning a round ball with a round cup, the golfer is provided with a straight edge surface which assists him in lining up the putt.
It accordingly will be seen that there is provided an apparatus in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted for the conditions of practical use.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of our invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. A golfing putter comprising (a) a shaft,
(b) an elongated head substantially rectangular in cross section along both its longitudinal and transverse axes, and defining opposing pairs of side and edge faces,
(0) the head being provided along each of two adjacent side and edge faces with a longitudinally arranged, centrally located series of openings,
(d) a handle, and
(e) securing means for securing the handle at a predetermined angle in a selected one of the openings.
2. The golfing putter of claim 1 wherein the openings are drilled and tapped openings and wherein the securing means comprises a bolt bent at the predetermined angle and having its end threaded for insertion in the selected opening.
3. The golfing putter of claim 1 wherein the openings are internally threaded and wherein the securing means comprises a bolt bent at the predetermined angle to form two sections, an inner section being dimensioned for frictional reception in .the end of the shaft and the outer end being threaded and dimenioned for reception in the selected one of the internally threaded openings.
4. The golfing putter of claim 1 wherein the openings are internally threaded and wherein the securing means comprises a bolt bent at the predetermined angle to form two sections, an inner section being dimensioned for fric tional reception in the end of the shaft and the outer end being threaded and dimensioned for reception in the seselected one of the internally threaded openings, and including pin means penetrating the handle and the inner segment of the bolt for securing the bolt to the handle, and including also lock nut means threaded on the threaded section of the bolt and arranged for bearing against the outer surface of the putter head.
5. In a golfing putter provided with a handle, a head comprising an elongated block, substantially rectangular in cross section along both its longitudinal and transverse axes, and defining opposing pairs of side and edge faces, the head being provided along each of two adjacent side and edge faces with a longitudinally arranged, centrally located, series of openings, each dimensioned and adapted for interchangeable attachment to the putter handle, and 1,334,189 3/1920 Swanson 273168 means on said handle for selective attachment in said 1,610,802 12/ 1926 McNair 27380.1 openings. 2,932,515 4/1960 May 27380.1 References Cited 3,292,928 12/ 1966 Billen 273-163 UNITED STATES PATENTS ANTON o.
