Description

I (No Model.) P. G. SIMONDS,
VALVE GEAR FOR ENGINES No. 307,995. Patented Nov. 11, 1884.
IIIIIIIIIII/ INVENTOR:
BY ATTORNEYS.
. UNITED STATES ATENT GFFICE.
VALVE-GEAR FOR ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,995, dated November 11, 1884..
Application filed May 14, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may'corwern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS G. SnuoNDs, of Kennebunk, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valve-Gears for Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my regulator in combination with a governor; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the regulator, the valve-rod being in section.
A is a ball-governor of ordinary character. a is the rod from the eccentric of the engine, and bis the valve-rod.
c is a slotted link pivoted at its lower end to the upper end of a guide-spindle, cl, that is fitted to slide vertically in a post, 0.
' f is a rod connected to the upper end of spindle d and to the end-of the lever g of the governor A. The eccentric-rod a is attached by a pivot-pin to the upper end of the link, and on the valve-rod b is a gib, h, provided with aside stud projecting into the slot of the link.
In operation the link is rocked on its connection to guidespindle d by the movement of eccentric-rod a, and the travel of valve-rod b is determined by the position of the link. In the position shown, with the governor-balls down, the link is at its lowest point, and consequently the longest movement is given to thevalverod. As the balls rise the link is raised and movement of the valve-rod correspondingly shortened until the stud on gib h coincides with the center on which the link swings, when movement of valve-rod ceases.
It will be seen that the full pressure of steam will be on the engine at all times, and the amount allowed to enter the cylinder will be regulated by the greater or less opening of the valves by means of the regulator, according to the load.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the governor A, its lever g, the eccentric-rod a, and the valve-rod b, of the post 6, vertically-moving guide-spindle mounted therein, rod f, connecting the upper end of said spindle with lever g, slotted link 0, pivoted at its lower end to the upper end of the spindle d, and connected at its upper end to the eccentric-rod a, and the gib h, held to slide in the slot in the link and connected to the valve-rod, substantially as set forth.
