VALVE-GEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1915.
Application filed November 4, 1913. Serial Ito. 799,061.
To n7Z whom may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFTON REEVES, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and in the State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valve- Gears, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to a valve gear which is especially adapted for use in steam engines, although it may also be used in engines of other types.
The object of my invention is to produce an accelerating valve gear of the kind above referred to. Hitherto, valve gears ordinarily used have been so constructed as to operate the valves at the same rate of speed as, or proportionate to the speed of the eccentric rod. Such constructions produce only a small movement of the valve for the corresponding movement of the eccentric rod. In my invention, however, the valve is moved at an increasing rate of speed as the eccentric rod advances, so that thereby I obtain an accelerating movement of the valve. I therefore obtain an increasing degree of movement of the valve corresponding to a particular movement of the eccentric rod.
\Vhile my invention is capable of embodiment in many different forms, for the purpose of illustration I have shown only one form thereof in the accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a diagrammatic side elevation of a valve gear made in accordance with my invention.
In the drawings I have shown an eccentric rod 1 which is connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 2, pivoted at 3 to any suitable part of the engine. The other arm of the bell-crank lever 2 is connected by means of a link 4 to the end of a lever 5 supported upon a pivot 6 which may be located upon any suitable part of the engine. A pin 7 is provided, connecting the end of the lever 5 with one end of the link 4, and said pin is extended beyond the link 4 and is secured to a sliding block 8 adapted to reciprocate in a slide-way 9 situated in a valve lever 10 connected by means of a shaft 11 with the valve located in the en gine.
The valve itself may be constructed and applied to the engine in any suitable manner, and in accordance with any known construction. I have not shown and described the valve itself in detail, as this constitutes no portion of my invention.
In the operation of my invention, the eccentric rod 1 is moved back and forth by the eccentric to which it is attached in the usual manner. A movement of the eccentric rod to the left in the direction of the arrow, as shown in the drawing, will cause the upper arm of the bell-crank lever 52 to be moved downwardly in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure, thereby causing the link 4 to be moved to the left. This movement of the link 4 will cause the end of the lever 5 to be moved therewith, simultaneously elevating the sliding block in the slide-way 9. The movement of the parts in this manner will result in the movement of the valve lever 10 also in the direction of the arrow. It will be noted, however, that as the movement of the eccentric rod in the direction of the arrow progresses, the sliding block 8 will become more and more elevated, therebv decreasing the distance of the sliding block from the center of the shaft 11 connected to the engine valve, so that, as a consequence, the movement of the valve will be greatly accelerated as the eccentric rod advances in the direction of the arrow. This accelerating motion will also be increased, owing to the fact that as the upper arm of the bell-crank lever i is lowered, the speed of the link 4 in the direction of the arrow to the left of the figure will be greatly increased, assuming the eccentric rod 1 to be moving at a constant speed at a particular portion of its travel.
\Vhile I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a valve gear, the combination of an actuating rod. a valve and an accelerating gear connecting the rod to the valve, comprising a lever connection having a decreasingradius and accelerating gearing interposed between the lever connection and and the actuating rod.
2. In a valve gear, the combination of an actuating rod, a valve and an accelerating gear connecting the rod to the valve, comprising a lever connection having a decreasing radius, and an accelerating bell-crank lever interposed between the lever connection and the actuating rod.
posed between the lever connection and the actuating rod, and an additional lever, one end of Which is connected to the link, the other end of said link being connected to the bell-crank lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
CLIFTON REEVES.
