UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES FRANKLIN PUTNAM, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
PUPPET-VALVE.
SPECIFL CATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339.809, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed January 12, 1886.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FRANKLIN PUT- NAM, of Fitchburg, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Balance Puppet-Valves for Steam-Engines, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and which are sectional views of a valve-chest and valve with my improvements attached.
The object of my invention is to construct the valves so that they shall act as reliefvalves for the escape of water that may be pent up in the cylinder, or for any excessive pressure that may result from compression, &o., and is an improvement on Patent No. 213,030, March 11, 1879. This valve is also applicable to hydraulic-pressure pumps.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a steam-chest and valve constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the valve, showing a modification of the valve, with the spring protected against steam.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A B represent those parts of the chest which connect with the boiler and cylinder, and these are separated by the walls or partitions a and b, in which are the valve openings or apertures a b. The valves C C, which cover the apertures a b, are placed i Serial No. 188,279. (No model.)
over each end of the valve-stem D and bringing them up against the shoulders (I d formed on the stem. The lower valve, C, is rigidly secured in its position by a pin or other suitable means, while the upper valve, C, rests on the shoulder d, and is free to move upward or from the shoulder. To regulate and adjust this movement is the essential feature of my invention.
On the threaded end of valve-stem D, I place the screw-cap E, and between this cap and the valve 0 is interposed the spiral spring F. It is evident from this description that the resistance of the valve C can be readily adjusted to any desired pressure of the steam, so that the valve C may be held at any desired pressure and be raised from its seat without necessarily raising or opening the lower valve, C.
I am aware that it is not new to rest the valves upon the shoulders formed on the valve-stem, nor do I claim such, broadly,as my invention; but
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The valve-stem D, provided with the shoulders d d, and the valves C C, in combination with screw-cap E and spring F, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES FRANKLIN PUTN AM.
