have invented a new and useful Thermostat, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, no patents being obtained by me anywhere for this invention, with the exception of in the Empire of Germany, under Patent No. 48,319, dated the 27th day of October, 1888.
This invention relates to a heatexpanding block with cross-shaped intermediate blocks of difierent metals.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the simplest form of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side View of the central or main portion of the device. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the same. Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views of a modified form, in which the device is in double form. Figs. 7 and 8 are views of another modification. Fig. 9 shows one manner in which the device may be used.
In Figs. 1 and 2, s is a rod of high expansibility,having attached to its ends on each side thereof a T-shaped piece G. The limbs s of these pieces diverge from their points of attachment with the central rod to their center, as from 0 to o. The limbs s extend approximately at right angles, and at their ends are fastened to bow-shaped plates .9 similar to the limbs s of the T-shaped piece G, with the exception that the said piece G is of low expan sibility, while the plates 5 are highly expansible.
In the operation of the device the expansion of the bar 3 will tend to straighten the limbs s" of the pieces G, causing their centers This action will move the points 0 at the ends of the plate 5 toward each other, and this movement, together with the expansion of the bowshaped plates 5 will cause a considerable separating movement at the center a: of the plates 3 which movement may be utilized to (N0 model.) I have shown in Fig. 9 one manner of applying the device, this being sufficient to lead to a clear understanding of the invention. Though I have shown the device in connection with a steam-trap, it will be understood that its use is not limited to this particular combination.
The valve S, Fig. 9, is attached to one of the plates 5 while an adjustable bar S is connected with the other plate, by means of which the tension of the device may be varied as desired.

lVhen the trap is filled with steam and heat, the valve S is closed by the movement of the plate 5 As soon, however, as the apparatus is submerged in the water of condensation it is cooled and the valve is opened.
The device may be used in connection with steam-pressure-reducing valves.
It will be understood that the character of the various parts as to their expansibility may be the opposite of that above described without departing from the spirit of my invention, said change merely giving a reverse action of the plates 3 from that above described-that is to say, the parts 8 and .9 may be of low expansibility, while the part G is of the opposite degree. This will result in an inward movement of the bow-shaped plates 8 under the action of heat.
The device may be of double or multiple form, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, respectively, in order to multiply the effect.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In'combinatiomthe bow-shaped plate 8 of high expansibility, the limbs s of opposite expansibility connected to the ends of said plate .9 and means for moving the limbs .9 toward each other as the plate .9 expands, substantially as described.
