BRODHEAD, WISCONSIN.
SPRING-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,512, dated November 4., 1884. Application filed Dcember 24, 1883. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. WrLLIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brodhead, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and usefulInv proveinent in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in spring-beds; and it consists in the combination of the slats, the springs which are placed thereon, a flexible covering which is stretched over. the tops of the springs, side bars to which opposite edges of the covering are secured, and suitable holding devices for securing the side bars in position, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a removable flexible covering which can be stretched over the tops of the springs for the purpose of holding them in position upon the slats in such a manner as to prevent any derangement of the springs or slats while the bed is in use.
Figure 1 is a perspective of abed to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical crossscction of the bed and its attachments.
Upon the slats b are placed a suitable number of spiral springs, a, and over the tops of these springs is stretched the flexible covering 5 This covering may be made of canvas or any other suitable material, and has its oppositeedges fastened to the side bars, 6. These side bars rest upon the tops of the slats upon opposite sides of the springs, as shown in Fig.
.4 and are held down suitable catches or buttons, 0. By turning these buttons around, so that their ends will not catch over the side bars, 6, the covering can be quickly removed at any time, This covering 9 and its side bars, 6, serve to secure the springs and the slats together in such a manner that neither the springs nor the slats can become deranged accidentally while the bed is in use.
I am aware that it is not new to stretch a covering across the tops of the springs, and this I disclaim. My invention differs from this in having the covering 9 secured to the side bars, and in the ihanner of securing the side bars in position upon the slats.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the bed-frame, the slats, the springs placed thereon, the side bars, 6, the covering 9, secured to the side bars and extending over the tops of the springs, and the catches c, for holding the side bars in place, substantially as shown.
FRANCIS I-I. WILLIS.
