Description

T. S. '& J. A. LOCKHART.

Patented Nov. 27. 1860.
FHOTO LITHOGRAPHEE WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS S. LOOKHART AND JOHN A. LOOKHART, OF WELLINGTON, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 30,740, dated November 27, 1860.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS S. LOCKHART and JOHN A. IJOGKHART, of Wellington, in the county of La Fayette and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a perspective side view of the plow; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the other side of the lower part of the plow, and Fig. 3 a horizontal cross section.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement of a bent rod serving as a standard, a collar fastened to the inside of the moldboard, and a curved brace, in combination with perforations in the standard and nuts, for the purpose to be d scribed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we. will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The standard of this plow consists of a rod formed into a vertical portion, O, provided with two or more holes, H H, a horizontal part, O, and another vertical part curved in a line adapted to the shape of the mold-board J. This standard is permanently secured to the beam A and handles B B. The mold-board J slides upon the curved part 0 of the standard by means of a collar, I, fastened to the inside of the mold-board and embracing the rod 0', as seen in the drawings.
A brace, E, curved in the line of an arc of a circle the center of which is in the collar I, is secured at one end to the mold-board, as seen at F, while its other and screw-threaded end passes through one of the holes H in the standard, and is fastened to the latter by nuts G G.
It will be seen that on unscrewing the outer nut G the mold-board can be swung on the part 0 of the standard a sufficient distance to withdraw the end of the curved brace E from its hole H. The mold-board can then be moved up or down on standard 0 and secured in its position by inserting the end of the curved brace E into the corresponding hole, H, and again screwing the nut G to the outer end of said curved bra -e. Thus it will be understood the pitch of the mold-board can be adjusted.
By adjusting the clamping-nuts G G the brace E can be lengthened or shortened, so as to set the mold-board 1110lc or less obliquely, and thus cause it to cut a larger or smaller slice of land.
The double adjustability of this plow is obtained by very simple means, as will be seen from the above description, and the whole constrnction combines strength and lightness.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- .The arrangement of a bent rod, 0 O 0, serving as a standard, a collar, I, fastened to the inside of the mold-board J, and a curved brace, E, in combination with perforations H H in the standard and nuts G G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
. The abovespecification of our improvement in plows signed by us this 13th day of September, 1860.
THOMAS S. LOGKHART. JOHN A. LOGKHART. Witnesses J. L. MARsHALL, JOSEPH TIDBALL.
