I. E. PALMER.
SAFETY GLEAT. No. 307,219. Patented 0011281884.
N. PETERs. Plmm-Lnm m mr, Washinghm. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcno ISAAC E. PALMER, OF MIDDLETOWVN, CONNECTICUT.
S AFE TY-CLEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,219,dated October 28, 188
Application filed February 9, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, of the city of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Cleats for Hammock Suspension-Ropes and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a cleat which is provided with holes for screws or other securing devices, and which is to be rigidly secured to a post, wall; or other suitable support; and an important object of the invention is to provide a cleat in which the two end portions of a rope which is passed througha hammock ring may be adj ustably secured by slip-connections,'thus providing for readily lengthening or shortening the rope, as may be desired, and for holding the rope securely against slipping when weight is placed in the hammock. The cleat is, however, applicable to other purposes for securing a single rope or two end portions of a rope.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my cleat employed to suspend ahammock, the size of the cleat and the hammock-ring being exaggerated in order to illustrate them more clearly. Fig.
2 is a back view of the cleat and the portions of rope secured thereby, and Fig. 3 is a side.
view of the cleat.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the end portion of a hammock. B designates the suspension-cords, which are attached to a ring, C, and D designates a suspension-rope, whichis passed through the ring C, and the end portions, D D, of which are secured in my improved cleat, which is rigidly secured against the wall or other support, E.
The safety-cleat consists of a raised portion, F, provided with a foot or base portion, F, having holes a, through which screws are or may be inserted for securing the cleat rigidly to the support E, and at the center it has or may have a hole, a, for the reception of a third securing-screw. The cleat here shown is a double one, in order to secure the two end portions, D, of the suspension-rope D, and at the rear side it is hollowed out or cut away at b for the reception of the rope, leaving a central rib, c, which is coincident with the base portions F and adds strength to the device.
In the raised portion F of the cleat are formed a pair of eyes, d d, and beyond the said eyes are two necks, e 0, also formed from the raised portion F. As here shown, the said necks are formed by a second pair of eyes, ff,- but said eyes are not essential, and serve simply as guards or guard-eyes to confine the rope when not under strain.
The method of reeving the rope in is shown in Fig. 1, and a description of the mannerof securing one end portion, D, of rope will apply to both end portions. The end portion, D, of rope is first passed through the eye at from the front to the rear side of the cleat and is then passed around and across the neck 6 by inserting it through a guard-eye, f, from the front to the rear side of the cleat, after which the rope is passed behind the neck and between it and the portion of rope which eXtends between the eye d at the rear side of the cleat and the neck 0. Any pull on the rope D in the direction of the arrow 8, which would result from weight placed in the hammock, will bind the portion of the rope on the portion between it and the back of the cleat, and thus securely hold the rope against slipping. When the hammock is unoccupied, a pull on either protruding end of the rope in the direction of the arrow .9 will tighten it, or take up slack, and if the portion is eased up the protruding end may be pushed under the said part of rope to increase thelength of the depending portion of the rope. Vhen the cleat is made double, as shown, for two rope portions, both portions of rope are adjustably secured by slip-connections.
I make no claim to a cleat consisting of a base portion and a tubular socket having a longitudinal]y-tapering slot or slitextending from one end inward. In such a cleat the rope is passed through the tubular socket and drawn down into the tapering slit, and the rope is held by said tapering slit, and not by having one portion of rope clamped between a neck and another portion of rope which extends between an eye and said neck.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. A safety-cleat wherein a rope or cord may the cleat the neck.
2. A. safety-cleat, for a rope or cord, consisting of a foot or base portion, through which are to be inserted securing devices for attaching the cleat rigidly toa support, and a raised portion having a pair of eyes and necks, through and around which the two end portions of a rope or cord are to be passed, substantially as herein described.
3. A safety-cleat for a rope or cord, consisting of a base portion, through which are to be inserted securing devices for attaching the cleat rigidly to a support, and a raisedportion having an eye and a neck, through and around which the rope or cord is to be passed, said neck being formed by an eye beyond the eye first mentioned, substantially as herein described.
4. The safety-cleat consisting of the base portion F, provided with screw-holes a, and the raised portion provided with a pair of eyes, d (1, and a second pair of eyes, ff, forming two necks, e e, substantially as herein described.
I. E. PALMER.
