UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MULLEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
V DOCUMENT-BOX.
Application filed August 30, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MULLEN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved document-box for filing and storing businesspapers of all kinds.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 'represents a perspective view of my improved document-box. Fig. 2 shows a top view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on line at m, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section of the same on line i/ 3 Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A'represents the body of my improved document-box, which is made of sheet metal, and open at the rear part of the top, and partly or entirely open at the back. The edges of the open part of the body are folded inwardly, so as to prevent injury to the hands. At its front part the body A of the box is provided with inwardly-bent flanges a a, which are mitered at the corners, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The flanges a a are inserted into grooves 12 b, that are cut by acircular saw into the sides of the wooden front or head B. The grooves 12 b are preferably out centrally of the edges of the head B, of difier- The head B is slid along the flanges of the sides of the box until the flange of the bottom takes into the groove at the bottom of the head. The flange of the top of the body is then inserted into the top groove of the head, and the top CIIEIGAJI'ION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,215, dated October 28, 1884.

then soldered to the sides of the body. The bottom of the body A is provided near the rear wall with an opening, A. having an upwardly-curved circumferential flange, a. This opening serves for the insertion of the thumb, which raises the documents or papers filed in the box, and for holding the box when searching for any particular document. A ring is attached by a staple, in the usual manner, to the front B, for pulling the box out of its pigeon-hole or casing.
The advantages of my improved documentbox are that a durable and convenient box for filing papers of all kinds is obtained, which is stiffened by the front or head, and without giving the appearance of a tin box thereto, While the bottom opening facilitates the handling of the box and the removal of papers from the same.
as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved document-box composed of 60
