UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OASIMIR HYAOINTHE BISSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ART OF ORNAMENTING METALLIC SURFACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,169, dated October 28, 1884.
Application filed September 6, 1883. Specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CASIMIR H. BIssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Art of Ornamenting Metallic Surfaces, such as Jewelry, Watch-Cases, Silver-Ware, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention consistsin first matting the surface to be ornamented, and then producing the design on such surface by burnishing, as fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a metallic surface prepared to receive the burnishing by which the ornamenting is produced,
theoutlineofthedesign being indicated. Fig.
by the use of a sand-blast or a steel brush. I
next ornament the surface thus prepared with any ornamental design desired-as, for instance, the design I), the outlines of which are given in said figure. This design, which is completed in Fig. 2, and is there designated by c, is produced by burnishing the matted surface with appropriate tools-such as steel or agate pencil-shaped burnishers-and is shaded by exerting more or less pressure upon the tool, as the case requires, the depth or darkness of the shades being the more apparent the more highly the matted surface is burnished or polished.
I am aware that ornamental designs have been made on matted surfaces by engraving with a sharp tool or gravel; but myinvention differs therefrom, in that I do not cut into the metal, but merely smooth or burnish it, and in the design itself the shades have a far softer appearance than when out or engraved.
I claim The process of decorating metal surfaces, consisting in first matting the surface, and then producing the ornamental design upon the matted surface by burnishing, substantially as specified.
GASIMIR HYACINTHE BISSON.
