W. P. HOBSON.
300T 0R SHOE UPPER. No. 306,751. A 4 Patented Oct. 21, 1884.
Wtwwaas.
Irw arr/i0 7" a the ATnNr \VILLIAM I HOBSON, OF IIAVERHILL, D'IASSAOHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE UPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,751, dated October 21, 1884-.
Application filed March 10, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beatknown that I, TILLIAM I HOBSON, of I-Iaverhill, in the county of Essex and State of l\'lassachusetts, have invented certain-Improvements in Boot or Shoe Uppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to economize material in cutting out boot and shoe uppers; and it consists in theimprovements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the piece constituting the vamp and quarters of my improved boot or shoe. Fig. 2 represents a plan of one of the supplemental instep or middle pieces which completes one side of a shoe or buskin. Fig. 3 represents a side view ofa buskin-upper embodying my invention. Fig. 4. represents a side view of a high-cut boot or shoe embodying my invention.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In carrying out my invention I cut from a single piece, of substantially the form shown in Fig. 1, a vamp, o, and two quarters, q q, the vamp being separated from the quarters along the line a b, which forms the rear end of'the vamp and the forward ends of both quarters, while the quarters are separated from each other along the line 0 d, which forms the lower edge of each quarter.
In formingthe upper the quarters are placed I in the relation to the vamp shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the rear ends of the vamp overlapping the forward ends of the quarters, (or the re verse, if preferred,) the quarters being separated from the vamp above the overlapping portions. To complete the upper, I secure to the vamp and quarters two instep-pieces 0r o supplemental quarters, i. The form of said pieces may be variously modified. In a low shoe or buskin the pieces i will be formed as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, while in a high-cut boot or shoe the pieces i will be extended upwardly-above the quarters, as shown in Fig. 4, and united at the heel.
It will be seen that the described form of the I quarters and vamp and the method of cutting enable said parts to be formed without waste and with the minimum expenditure of time and labor, each cut forming the edges of two parts.
The supplemental pieces 2' for low shoes or buskins can be readily produced from odd scraps or cuttings.
I claim The improved boot or shoe upper composed of the vamp o and the quarters q q, all cut from a single piece along the lines a b and c d,
as described, and the supplemental quarters or instep portions secured to the vamp and quarters, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two sub-
