Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. KINZER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO C. ADAMS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,654, dated November 13, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Kiivznn, of the city of Pittsburg, in the State of Pennsyl1 Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Door- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-h Figure l represents a perspective view of a inortise lock and its keeper, and Fig. 2 represents a face view of the latch bolt.
The nature of niy invention consists more particularly in the forin, and construction of the latch bolt of the lock, for the purpose of lessening the friction when the bolt comes in contact with the keeper, and is forced back into the lock, in closing the door, and also for the purpose of making the lock reversible, so that it may be used on a door opening` either to the right hand, or to the left, the interior of the lock being of any well known construction.
To enable others skilled in the art to make, and use, my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A represents a mortise lock, which is furnished with the usual appliances of knob, shank, key, &c.
The latch bolt (B) is a vertical bar having upon its upper surface a projecting pin (c) reaching through, and forming the axis, or journal, of the horizontal roller (E), which roller, together with the vertical bar forms a sort of T shaped bolt as shown in the drawings.
D, is the keeper for this lock, and is a simple plate secured to the frame or casings of the door having openings corresponding to the shape or forni of the ends of the bolts of the lock.
In closing a door, having a lock, fur nished with a latch bolt of this description, the roller (E) (only) comes in contact with the keeper7 and forces the bolt back into the lock, until it comes opposite the opening in the keeper, into which it is then driven by the spring connect-ed with the bolts. In this position the bolt is retained by the vertical bar (b) bearing squarely against the keeper, so that the door cannot be opened, until the bolt is drawn back by the knob, or shank, to which it is attached.
This latch bolt may be applied to a niortise lock or to a rim (or outside) lock and used on a door opening either to the right hand or to the left without changing any of its parts and just as it connes from the factory.
Having thus fully described the nature and objects of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Combining the roller (E) with the latch bolt (B) for the purpose of lessening the friction when forcing the bolt back into the lock, substantially as shown and described.
JACOB KINZER.
Vitnesses W. B. COPELAND, N. M. MoDowELL.
