lINiTnn STATES ATENT @Tricia JACOB B. YEAGLEY, OF INDIABAPOLIS, INDIANA.
sAsH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,147, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed September 6, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. YEAGLEY, of Indianapolis,in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in whie Figure I represents my improved set into the window-frame for engaging with the upper and lower sashes, showing a vertical section of the lock for engaging with the uper sash and a side view of the lock engaging 2 and 3 are detail with the lower sash. Figs.
construction of the escutcheoncovered by m former patent, dated August 12, 187 9, before referred. to.
The face-plate U in the present case is reduced to nearly onehalt the length used in the combined sash holder and lock, and one of the projecting portions of the tumbler D is dispensed with on account of dispensing with one of the check-Shanks necessary in the combined sash holder and lock.
In my present construction of sash-lock a third case-plate, A2, is essential for closing the end opening between the two side case-plates, A A', and which may be cast or formed with the face-plate C, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, or made in a single piece with either of the side case-plates, or one-half of said plate A2 made on each of the side case-plates.
While I do not wish to be confined to any particular arrangement of the case-plate A2, still I prefer to cast or form it with the faceplate C, for if made with the sidel case-plates there would have to be rights and lefts, thus necessitating their being sorted out in manufacturing or putting of the lock together, consuming muc time, which the present arrangement obviates, while facilitating the manufacture of the locks.`
Theface-plate C is provided on its inner face, near one end thereof, with a cross-bar, c, an( a recess, e', for the purpose of securing one end of a lat steel spring, E, in place, the other end of said spring resting and working on the heel of thev check-shank B. This 4is a much arrangement than the spiral springs used in my as it is more bar'e is avery ing the spring solid rest for mortise of the present construction of lock permitting of its being applied either in the window-frame or the sashes, as may be deemed expedienm and also by the use of the cross ar e and spring E, as arranged, the check shank or shanks cannot be drawn out of the face-plate,
in my former patents.
adjacent to views in the plates and keys to be used in connection with my improved locks.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements on my former patents for combined sash holders and locks, numbered and dated, respectively, 205,517, July 2, 1878, and 218,612, August 12, 1879,'and more especially to improvements on the lock portions thereof, having for its object the production of a sash-lock more especially adapted for sashes provided with balances, such as weights,` springs, 8tc.,in contradistinction to my former patents above referred to, and which were particularly adapted for sashes having no balances.
The invention also relates to certain new and useful improvements in escutcheon-plates and keys especially designed and adapted for my improved and combined sash holders and locks; tion consists j combination of parts, all as will be hereinaf fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention is most nearly connected to make and use the same, will now proceed to describe the construction and operation o the durable and reliable. This crossas while holdA In the drawings, A A represent the two side case-plates, provided with journal-bear ings for the check-shank B and dovetailed projections fitting into a recessed shoulder, c, o in the face-plate C, said parts being secure together by rivets, all as clearly set forth and as is the case The tumbler I) is cut away at cl, check-shank, so as to to come down site playnecessary in permit said farther, thus givin g it the requilocking or unlocking it.
former patents abovereferre';L 1177/ lSo heck-shank 1 lock of lower sash and to the right for lock of upper sash.
As before stated, my improved sash-lock is only adapted for sashes having balances, and to apply it, raise the lower s sh as high as it be raised, then put lock in mortise formed short end of faceplate upward, when the sash can be drawn down l without unlocking or throwing back the check-shank through the medium ot' the tumbler and key.
For the upper versed or downward. sash my improved lock acts as both a sash holder and lock`as, for instance, if the upper sash were opened by being let downward for ventilation it could not be pushed farther down, and consequentlyit prevents sash from goingdown without unlocking the check-shan k l butcould only be pushed up without the use of' the key, which would only be closing the window, and which, when closed, could only be put down by g check-shank. rlhis lock, it will also be observed, is particularly convenient in case of storms coming up quickly`as, for were sufcientl up quickly or be pushed up lowersash down or closed withkeys, and when closed would be instantly locked by the autoshank.

aving thus fully described my invention, I do not desire to be understood as claiming, broadly, a sash-lock having pivoted and spring cani levers or arms operated by a key, nor, broadly, anything' shown and claimed in my former patents.
am aware that flat springs applied in a similar manner to hinges are olf, and such I distinctly disclaim as my invention; lbut claim` l. In a sash-lock, the combination, with the pivoted check-shank B, face-plate C, and side case-plates, A A', ofthe tumbler ,cut away its stop b', substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown n a sash-lock, the combination, with the tumbler D, of the check-shank with the sto end case-plate, A2, provided with the stop b', substantially as and e purpose herein shown and described.
