Description

UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
CALVIN ADAMS, OF PITTSBURG. PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,949, dated July 3, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN ADAMS, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible or Right and Left Hand Door- Locks; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a portion of the mortise lock, and its keeper. Flg. 2, represents a perspective View of the rim lock and its keeper, and Fig. 3, represents a face view of the latch-bolt.
The nature of my invention consists more particularly, in the form or construction,
of the latch bolt and keeper, of the lock, so that the lock may be used as a reversible, or right and left hand mortise lock, as well as for a rim lock, the interior of the lock being of any well known construction.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the Same with reference to the drawings.
A, represents a mortise lock, which is let into a door in the usual way, and is furnished with the usual appliances of knobs, shank, key &c. The bolt B, of the lock, has upon its end two inclined planes or bevels a, a, receding from each other in a horizontal plane, and a vertical bar b, which bar, with the inclined planes forni a sort of T shaped bolt, as shown in the drawings. C, is the keeper for this mortise-lock. It may be a simple plate screwed fast to the door-jamb or frame, or it may be a box or cell keeper let into the frame. This keeper is furnished with openings corresponding with the shape or form of the outer ends of the bolts, for
the purpose of receiving and holding said bolts.
In closing a door furnished with a lock of this description or construction, the bevel or plane a, when it comes in contact with the keeper, will force the bolt back into the lock until it comes opposite the opening c, in the keeper, when the spring connected with the bolt, will shoot it into said opening. If the whole depth of the bolt were beveled or inclined as the portions a are, slight pressure upon the door would force back the bolt, and allow it to fly open, but by using the vertical portion b, with the inclined portions, the part b, will bear squarely against the keeper, and thus prevent the bolt from being forced back by pressure against the door. This lock and keeper can be used for a door opening either to the right, or to the left, without changing, any of its parts, or position, and just as it comes from the factory.
In Fig. 2, I have represented a rim or J anus faced lock, having a bolt in it as above described. This rim-lock, is reversible also, and will act on a right or left hand door equally well, but is designed for the outside of the door, instead of being mortised into it, as in the case of Fig. 1. The keeper for this lock is a boX keeper, having a flange e, beveled off on one edge as shown. The other edge is shaped to suit either side of the outer ends of the bolt-s, for the purpose of receiving and holding the bolts. The object in shaping the inner edge of the flange on the keeper, to fit the bolts at both of its ends, or each side of its center is that, the keeper may be used either end up while the lock itself may be required to go onto the door with one particular end up. This lock, however, like the above described mortise lock, is ready when it leaves the factory, for either a right, or left hand door, without changing any of its parts. It is, however, finished on both of its sides, while the mortise lock is only incased without the necessity of any outside finish.
Having thus fully described the nature and obj ect of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In combination with a mortise or rim lock, a bolt having the inclines a, a, and vertical part o, on its end, for the purpose of adapting said locks to either a right hand, or to a left hand door, substantially as herein described.
oALvIN ADAMS.
