FRUIT-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi" Letters Patent No. 306,166, dated October 7, 1884-.
i i Application filed February 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIA L. MATHEWS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit'Presses; and I do dcclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the lid. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the double-winged slot hereinafter described.
The press-box A is made preferably in the cylindrical form shown, and has its bottom A dished or made concave on its upper side, as
most clearly shown in Fig. 3. Holes or discharge-openings A are formed through the center of the bottom piece through which the juice is pressed. A depending annular flange or ring, B, is secured on the bottomA around these openings A. This ring is adapted to fit in the mouth of a jar or similar receptacle when the juice is being pressed, and when so desired a cloth or similar strainer may be placed over the said ring and held in position by the bottom of the press -box hearing it against the top of the jar, as will be understood. Slots 0 are formed in the upper end of the box A. These slots are formed with the two wings C 0 The wing U is cut ver tically down from the upper edge of the box, and the wing C is extended horizontally from the lower end of wing G, as most clearly shown in Fig. 5. The wing C", it will be understood, is extended in the direction of rotation of the presser-screw, presently described, I prefer to use three of these slots G, as shown, though it is obvious the number may be varied to suit the wishes of the maker. The lid D is conformed to the shape of thebox, and isprovided with radial lugs D,fitted to the slots 0, and corresponding in number thereto. A beam, D, is secured on the upper side of the lid, so the latter can be readily rotated in securing. it in place on the box, and also to supplement the bearing of the presser-screw. A threaded opening, D, is formed through the lid. The presser-scrcw E turns through this opening, and is provided with a cross-bar, E, or similar devices whereby it may be revolved. The lower end'of this screw bears against the follower F, preferably in the socket F,formed in the upper side thereof, as most clearly shown. My machine is simple and easy of operation. The fruit is placed in the box, the follower is placed in on the fruit, and the lid is applied, as described, when, by turning the screw, the pressing is accomplished.
In applying the lid it is placed with its lugs D down in wing G of slots, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig, l. The lid is then partially rotated to the position shown in full lines, same figure, when the lid is securely held to the box. The direction of this lid-fastening rotation, it will be seen, is the same as the pressing rotation of the scre\v,so the operation of the latter will not effect the unfastening of the lid.
It is manifest that where so desired a lever could be substituted as a pressing means for the screw before described; also, that instead of the lid a cross-bearing bar could be employed.
I have shown the follower as detachedfrom the screw. Where so desired the follower could be swiveled on the lower end of the screw, and may also be provided with radial notches fitted to slide on guide-rails secured on the inner face of the box.
Having thus described myinveution, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the box having its bottom made concave on its upper or inner face, and provided with discharge-openings in the middle part of said bott0m,and a depending annular flange or ring surrounding said discharge-openings, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein' described fruit-press, comewe ii.
scales 'BESTAVAILABLE'COP ing through a threaded opening in the lid and bearing at its lower end against the follower,
all substantially as and for the purposes speci- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 15 presence of two witnesses.
