aIXeRVIN A. WINTERMEYER FINN G. OLSEN ATTORNEY United States Patent Filed Jan. 13, 1960, Ser. No. 2,246 6 Claims. (Cl. 12028) The present invention relates to a card clip adapted to be mounted on a typewriter or similar apparatus.
One of the problems faced by librarians, research workers, and others who are required to transfer data from file cards onto other file cards or onto similar records is the care that must be taken in transcribing such data so that no errors are made in the process. The normal procedure requires placing the file card on the typewriter stand or desk at one side of the typewriter, which procedure is not especially satisfactory, particularly when the typist has a heavy work load and is required to proof read or check the work that has been typed.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved card clip adapted to be mounted on a typewriter so as to facilitate transcribing by the typist in the most rapid and accurate manner.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a card clip of the foregoing character which can easily be attached to any standard typewriter without interfering with the normal operations of such typewriter.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a card clip of the foregoing character which is constructed and arranged so that when mounted on a conventional typewriter, a conventional file card can be easily and quickly mounted in and removed from said clip.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a card clip of the foregoing character which is characterized by its simple construction and low cost.
Other objects of this invention will appear in the following description and appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.

Before explaining the present invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
Referring now to the drawing, the invention will be described in greater detail. The conventional typewriter is provided with a platen 11 and a hinged top cover 12 which covers the type (not shown). The card clip 14 is shown in FIGURES 1 and 2 mounted on the edge of the hinged top cover 12, and the card clip 14 carries a file card 16. When the card clip 14 is mounted in this position, the card 16 is positioned immediately in front of the material being typed so that the typist can transcribe directly from the card 16 onto such material, and the same "ice can be proof read simultaneously with the typing operation.
The card clip 14 has a body member 18 which has a cross section (as best seen in FIGURE 2) which is generally J-shaped so that a short leg portion 20 is joined to the long leg portion 22 by a base portion 24. The short leg portion 21? has a smooth arcuate upper surface terminating in a pointed edge 26 which is adapted to fit against the upper surface of the top cover 12. The short leg portion 2%? also has a transverse shoulder 28 projecting outwardly from the other end to provide a surface facing the pointed edge 26 against which the card 16 is adapted to be abutted. Any suitable material such as extruded aluminum stock may be used in manufacturing the body member 18.
Mounted on the body member 18 at the base portion 24 is spring element 30 formed of a resilient wire. The spring element 30 has a W-shaped portion 32 located in one plane and a pair of spring arms 34 located generally in a second plane at a right angle to the first plane. By virtue of this arrangement, the W-shaped portion 32 can be secured against the base portion 24 by means of the screw 36 and washer 38. The spring arms 34 will then overlie the shoulder 28 and the ends thereof will engage the upper surface of the short leg portion 2-0. Thus, the card 16 can be inserted under the spring arms 34 into abutting relation with the shoulder 28, and the card 16 will be retained in this position by the spring arms 34. Furthermore, the card 16 can be inserted in place easily because of the arcuate shape of the upper surface of the short leg portion 20, and the pointed edge of the latter will prevent the card 16 from being inadvertently inserted between the cover 12 and short leg portion 20.
The card clip 14 is attached to the top cover 12 by means of the screw 4!) which projects through the free end of the long leg portion 22. By virtue of this arrangement the screw 40 can be advanced toward the top cover 12 until a rigid three point mounting is provided by the end of the screw 40, the base portion 24 and the pointed edge of the short leg portion 20. This assures that the card clip 14 will be out of the normal path of movement of the type (not shown). Thus, the clip 14 and the card 16 mounted thereon will in no way interfere with the normal functioning of the typewriter 10.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a typewriter having a platen and a hinged top cover overlying the type, a card clip mounted on the edge of said cover adjacent said platen and generally midway between opposite sides of the typewriter, said card clip comprising a body member defining a generally flat lower portion and an upper portion projecting from an edge of the lower portion in a reverse direction so as to provide a slot between said portions which slot receives the edge of said cover, the upper portion terminating in a generally pointed edge which seats on the upper surface of said cover, said upper portion having a shoulder parallel to and spaced from said pointed edge against which a card can be abutted, a resilient wire element attached to the reverse bend of said body memher and formed to have two spring arms overlying said shoulder and seated adjacent their free ends on the upper portion near said pointed edge and under which said card can be inserted, and a screw threadedly connected to said lower portion adjacent the free edge thereof and projecting into engagement with the under side of said cover for cooperating in retaining the card clip on said cover.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a body portion formed of a section of an aluminum extrusion having a cross section of generally J-shape so that the body portion has a base portion joining short and long leg portions which are in spaced parallel relation, said short leg portion terminating in a pointed edge and having a raised shoulder projecting laterally outward from its end connected to said base portion, and a spring element mounted on said base portion and having at least one spring arm overlying said shoulder and engaging the surface of said short leg portion between said shoulder and said pointed edge, and a screw threadedly connected to the free end of said long leg portion and projecting toward the plane containing said short leg portion.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a relatively rigid body portion having a cross section of generally J-shape to provide a base portion joining short and long leg portions which are in spaced parallel relation, said short leg portion terminating in a pointing edge and having a raised shoulder projecting from its end connected to said base portion and facing toward said pointed edge, and a spring element mounted on said body portion and having at least one spring arm overlying said shoulder and engaging the surface of said short leg portion between said shoulder and said pointed edge, and a screw threadedly connected to the free end of said long leg portion and projecting toward the plane containing said short leg portion.
4. An article of manufacture as claimed in claim 3 wherein said spring element is formed of spring wire positioned in two planes generally normal to one another, the spring wire in the first plane being shaped generally into a W-shape with the free ends of the remote arms being deflected at right angles into the second plane.
5. An article of manufacture as claimed in claim 4 wherein said spring element is mounted on the said base portion by means of a screw passing through the central portion of the W-shape part of the spring element.
6. In combination with a typewriter having a platen and a hinged top cover overlying the type, a card clip mounted on the edge of said cover adjacent said platen and generally midway between opposite sides of the typewriter, said card clip comprising a body member defining a generally flat lower portion and an upper portion projecting from an edge of the lower portion in a reverse direction so as to provide a slot between said portions which slot receives the edge of said cover, the upper portion terminating in a generally pointed edge which seats on the upper surface of said cover, said upper portion having a transverse shoulder spaced from said pointed edge and against which a card can be abutted, a resilient element attached to said body member at a location remote from said pointed edge and having an arm seated at its free end on the upper portion near said pointed edge under which arm said card can be inserted and retained in abutting relation to said shoulder, and means on said body member for clampingly engaging the edge of said cover.
