(Cl. 128-432) This invention relates to a corset structure that combines the functions of a corset, girdle and brassiere.

An object of the present invention is to provide a garment of the charactar referred to that is lightweight and cool, yet quite strong and form-retaining for carrying out the functions thereof.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combination garment, as above, that has an open mesh foundation or body and is provided with encircling ribbons in spaced relation on said body to provide the latter with form-retention properties.

A further object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character referred to that provides for transverse stretchability by means of side inset panels, the ribbon-provided foundation otherwise being non-stretchable.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a garment as characterized that includes reinforcing stiffening means across the abdominal portion of the garment.

The invention also has for its objects to provide such means that are positive in operation, convenient in use, easily installed in a working position and easily disconnected therefrom, economical of manufacture, relatively simple, and of general superiority and serviceability.

The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawing merely shows and the following description merely describes, preferred embodiments of the present invention, which are given by way of illustration or example only.

In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view, seen from the front and one side, of a corset structure according to the present invention.

FIG. 2 is a broken view, as seen from the opposite side, of the lower portion of the garment.

FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional view showing the details of construction of the garment.

FIG. 4 is a further enlarged cross-sectional view as taken on the line 4--4, FIG 2.

FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a modified form of breast cup.

The garment that is illustrated comprises, generally, a body or foundation 10, a plurality of transversely applied ribbons 11 vertically spaced on said body, elastic side panels 12 provided in the waist, hip and thigh covering lower portion of the body, and a brassiere portion 13 provided on the upper end of the garment.

The body is preferably made of a fabric that is highly porous, net or voile being examples thereof. Said fabric is so disposed with respect to its warp and woof that the body has substantially no stretch vertically and transversely. In the present case, said body is formed to have a lower back edge 14 than is the front edge 15, to completely cover the front or abdominal, waist and chest portions of the wearer, the entire back of the wearer, and

the sides beneath the arm pits. The foundation body thus provided may be extended to include the brassiere portion 13 and serve as a liner 16 for the bust cups 17 of said latter portion.

The present body foundation is open on one side, as shown in FIG. 2, so the same may be donned. Said opening may be closed, after donning by a slide fastener 18 that extends from the brassiere to within approximately three inches of the bottom, a hook and eye tape 19 being used to close the portion of the garment below the lower end of the fastener 18. The garment is effectively closed even with the tape hooks and eyes unhooked, additional freedom across the thighs being afforded thereby.

The ribbons 11 may be spaced, as shown to allow air passage through the interstices of the net or voile foundation. Said ribbons are stitched by seams 20 along both edges thereof to the foundation and become a nonstretchable reinforcement of said foundation as well as lending a pleasing overall appearance to the garment.

The foundation body thus provided may have a stiffening reinforcement 21 across the abdomen on the inside of the net or 'voile body 10. Said reinforcement preferably comprises a silk jersey band 22 in which is provided three stays 23 that are vertically disposed at the middle of the front of the garment.

The side panels 12 connect the side edges of the front and back of the garment and extend from the bottom edge to include the waist. Said panels are made of a material that has stretch in only one direction, in this case, transversely. Accordingly, the net or voile body has the sides removed so that the panels 12 are free to stretch on the body of the wearer.

A similar panel 24 may be provided in the lower front of the garment, the same being gore shaped and providing stretch across the garment front.

The brassiere portion 13 has the usual cups 17 that may have the net or voile fabric thereof covered by lace or other decorative material or, the same may be reinforced by ribbons 25, shown in FIG. 5.

The lower edge of the garment may he provided with a lace flounce 26 that may be formed, partly, as a crotch piece. Regardless how formed, the same is preferably made with silk jersey material 27.

While the foregoing specifications illustrate and describe what I now contemplate to be the best modes of carrying out my invention, the constructions are, of course, subject to modification without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Therefore, I do not desire to restrict the invention to the particular forms of construction illustrated and described, but desire to cover all modifications that may fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A corset structure comprising an integral and thin, porous, woven fabric body having its warp and woof directed to impart non-stretchability to said body both vertically and horizontally, said fabric body having a front panel member extending to cover the chest and abdom inal portions of the wearer, and a back portion to cover the back of the wearer, a plurality of vertically spaced, non-stretchable, horizontal ribbons arranged over the entire outer front and back surfaces of said body, stitching along the opposite longitudinal edges of the ribbons securing the latter to the fabnic body, said falbric body having spaced front and rear side edges that extend from above the waist to the lower edge of the structure thereby defining opposite side openings over the sides of the waist and hips and thighs of the wearer, and transversely stretchable panels in said side openings and joined to said side edges of the front and back of: the body, the structure thereby being stretchable transversely only over the waist, hips and thighs of the wearer.

2. A corset structure according to claim 1 in which is provided a gore-shaped opening in the middle of the body front and extending from the lower edge of the front upwardly toward but short of the Waist, and a transversely stretchable panel in said gore-shaped space, said latter panel and the side panels thereby providing the body with increased stretchability over the hips and thighs of the wearer.
