UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
GEORGE ELLIS WAGGONEB, JACOB WAGGONER, AND DANIEL HENSHAW,
' I OF NEW HAMPTON, MISSOURI.
SlCKLE-HEADFOR MOWERS, REAPERS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Iietters Patent No. 305,360, dated September 16, 1884.
Application filed August 2, 1884. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. VAGGON- ER, J A0013 WAGGONER, and DANIEL HEN- SHAW, of New Hampton, in the county of Harrison and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulImprovenients in Sickle- Heads for Reapers, Mowers, 850.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in boxes for shaft-s especially designed to operate cutter-bar pitmen; and it consists of the combination and construction of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of ourinvention as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the same at right angles to the plane of the section of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the embodiment of our invention we suitably separably support or cast with an arm, A, fastened or connected to the reaper or mower frame, the head B,which is cast with a square or angular opening, a, from whose upper and lower surfaces or sides project cen tral ribs or webs, a, which are received into grooves in the halves of the box O, to prevent lateral displacement of the box.
D is a right-angled cap, with its shorter arm resting upon and connected to the top of the head B by a bolt, B, while its longer arm fits against and is bolted to the outer side by a screw or bolt, 6. The inner side of the longer arm of the right-angled casting or cap D is formed with two short stout projections or studs, 0, one entering a slight distance and forming one side of the opening a of the head B,while the other projection or stud, c, enters a recess of said head. The screw b bears at 5 its lower inner end upon a metallic plate resting upon one half of the box (3, (should, it be of wood, or directly thereon if of metal,) to coinpensate wear as it takes place in the box.
Said screw is provided with a jam-nut, d,
which rests upon thetop of the cap D, to prevent the screw b from being jarred or working loose. The object of the head, together with the cap, is to enable the box to resist the pulling, pushing action of the pitman, thus promoting durability, lessening expense, and
avoiding the parts prematurely becoming impaired.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters 6 a Patent, is
1. The combination of the head having an opening to receive the box, said opening having at its upper and lower ends projections or webs entering grooves in the halves of the box,
. and the right-angled cap, substantially as and GEORGE ELLIS WVAGGONER. JACOB \VAGGONER. DANIEL HENSHAW.
