Description
Turns J ETE PATENT UFFICE HIRAM HOWE, OF HOUSTON, MINNESOTA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127 240, dated May 28, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Pitman Connection for Han vesters, &c., invented by HIRAM HOWE, of Houston, in the county of Houston and State of Minnesota.
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved connection. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for connecting the pitman to the cutter bars of harvesters and mowers, which shall be so constructed as to almost entirely prevent friction and wear, and which, should there be any wear, will allow it to be readily taken up; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a bar or arm, which is designed to be bolted, riveted, welded, or otherwise securely attached tothe inner end of the cutter-bar of a harvester or mower. Upon the end of the arm A is formed lugs or gudgeons al, having knife-edges formed upon their outer sides to rest against the inner surfaces of the eyes of the eyebolts B. In the middle part of the end of the arm A is formed a notch, a2, the bottom of which is beveled oft' upon its side edges to reduce it to a blunt or rounded edge ,which rests against the end of thel arm C,which may be the end of the pitman or cfa short bar or arm to be bolted, riveted, welded or otherwise securely attached to said pitman, which end may have a slight notch or groove formed in it to receive the edge of the bottom of the notch a2. Upon the bar or arm C, at a short distance from its end, is formed a crossbar, iD, having holes formed through its ends to receive the eyebolts B, which are secured to it by nuts screwed upon their projecting ends. Lock-nuts may be used,if desired. The device is designed to be made of steel or of iron case-hardened to prevent friction and wear.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved connection, formed by the combinationl of the arm A a1 a2, eyebolts B, arm C, and cross-bar D with each other, said parts being constructed substantially as here in shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
HIRAM HOWE. Witnesses:
