PLOW BEAM.
'APPLIGATION FILED JUNI: 29, 1910. 1,022,958.
CLIFFORD P. MEEK, OF GREENSBURG, INDIANA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PLOW-BEAM.
Patented'Apr. 9, 1912.
Application filed .Tune 29, 1910. Serial No. 569,540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD P. Mnnx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the county of Decatur and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Beams; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to plow beams.
My object is to produce a hollow steel plow beam which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manfacture, is more durable than a wooden beam, and has all of the advantages of the latter as to adjustment, etc.
A further object is to eliminate the wear of the fastening bolts on the beam.
The solid steel beams now in use have been found to be objectionable because their narrowness prevents the proper adjustments at the rear end thereof and at the clevis to vary the cutting width of the plow. When such an adjustment is attempted on such a beam, the plow will run in a twist, that is to say, either on the share or on the bar. Another objectionable feature of the solid metal beam is that if it is sprung, even g of an inch, it is impossible afterward to make adjustments so that the plow will run as it should.
My invention consists of a hollow steel beam' which is wide enough to permit the adjustments for securing the various cutting widths without removing the line of draft far enough away from the center of the beam to cause it to turn on its side.
The invention also consists in the particular and improved construction of the beam as'will be hereinafter fully explained.
The invention also consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 'l is a side view of a plow equipped with a beam constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the beam taken on the line mof Fig. l.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates the beam, 2 the handles, 3 the plow, and 4t the clevis. The rear end Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the beam is adjust-ably connected to a slotted bar 5 by means of the bolt 6, in the usual manner. The beam is formed of two pieces of sheet steel, 7 and 8, bent to form the top and bottom faces, respectively, of the beam, and portions of the sides thereof. The lateral edge of each piece is turned outwardly to form flanges 9 which are secured together by rivets 10 or in any other suitable way. These flanges extend the full length of each side of the beam and add greatly to its strength. l
In attaching the plow and other parts to the beam, were the nuts on the ends of the fastening bolts permitted to engage the top surface of the beam, the tightening of said nuts would depress said top surface and cause considerable wear thereon. To avoid this, I employ bolt sleeves 11 which extend throughout the full thickness of the beam, and on the ends of which the nuts bear instead of upon the top surface of the beam. Said bolt sleeves also act as trusses, adding strength to the beam, and they further prevent the bolts from cutting the openings in the beam larger. These bolt sleeves may be placed around all of the bolts passing through the beam, if desired, or only around those on which the most wear comes.
I claim:
l. A hollow plow beam generally rectangular in cross section comprising upper and lower pieces of bent sheet metal having outwardly turned flanges at their edges, said flanges being connected together and forming projecting reinforcing ribs extending longitudinally along the sides of said beam.
2. A hollow plow beam, generally rectangular in cross section, comprising upper and lower pieces of bent sheet metal, each having a horizontal portion, vertical portions at the edges of the horizontal portion, and outwardly extending horizontal flanges at the edges of said vertical portions, said flanges being connected together and forming projecting reinforcing ribs extending longitudinally midway of the sides of said beam. l
In testimony whereof, I aix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
CLIFFORD P. MEEK.
