UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS SOHWERIN, OF NEWVARK, NEW JERSEY.
HANDLE-CONNECTION FOR TRAVELING-BAGS.
FPECIPICA'l'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,341, dated September 16, 1884. Application filed June 16, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Monnrs SOHWERIN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Connection of Handles to Bag-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it per- IO tains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the connection of handles to baglocks; and it consists in the combination, with the handles and the straps are secured in position, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to pass the ends of the holding-straps down through slots in the ends of the lock-frame and lock-plate,
and, if desired, through the bag-frame, and
then secure the ends of the holding-straps and the lock-frame in position by means of the same rivets, and thus simplify and cheapen the method of securing the handles in position,
0 as well as to brace and strengthen the lock.
Figure lis a side elevation, partly in section, showing the ends of the holding-straps as pass, ingthrough the lock-frame and lock-plate only. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the 3 5 ends of the straps as being passed down through the bag-frame. Fig. 3 is a detached view of one of the locking-straps before its ends are bent outward.
A represents an ordinary bag-lock, and O The ends of this lock-frame A are reduced in thickness, as shown, and
both the ends of .the lock-frame and the lockplate have slots D made through them for the passage of the lower ends of the holding-straps of metal, which is. bent double around the ring or loop I, to which the ends of the handles are fastened, and after the ends of these holdingstraps are passed through the slots in the lockframe and lock-plate the ends of the straps are turned outward in opposite directions, as shown. The ends of these straps may be simply passed through the lock-frame and lockplate, as shown in Fig. 1, or they may be also made somewhat longer, and then passed down through the lock-frame. lock-plate, and bag frame F, as shown in Fig. 2. Through the ends of the lock-frame, the lock-plate, and the holding-straps, are made suitable openings, through which the rivets O, by means of which the look is secured in position, are passed.
G. These straps are made from asingle piece 5 These rivets are made to pass through the out I turned ends of the holding-straps, as shown, for the purpose of securing them rigidly in position, so that they cannot possibly draw out after the lock has once been fastened in position. By thus securing the ends of the holding-straps so that they cannotbe drawn out the lockframe and lock-plate are braced and made more rigid, and a lighter metal can be used for the straps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the lock-frame, the lockplate, the straps, and the rivets, the ends of the straps being passed down through the loclc frame and then turned outward in opposite directions, and secured in place by means of the same rivets which secure the lock frame and plate to the bag-frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORRIS SGHWERIN.
