SWEAT HORSE-COLLAR ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,032, dated September 9, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERVIN E. WVITHEY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sweat-Collar Attachments to Horse-Collars, of which the follow ing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact de- .scription.

This invention relates to a novel, simple, inexpensive, and effective device for retaining a sweat-collar in its requisite position under a horse collar; and it consists in the con struction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in' the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a front viewof a horse-collar provided with my improvements. Fig. II is an enlarged transverse section of the lower portion of the aforesaid collar, taken 011 line 00 m, Fig. I. Fig. III is a full-sized perspective detached view of the strapretaining device, by which the sweat-collar obtains its hold on the hame, and Fig. IV is a longitudinal section of the same.

A represents a horse-collar of ordinary construction. B denotes the hames, detachably connected with the collar in the usual manner, and (l is the sweat-collar, which I secure in its requsite position under the collar A by the following instrumentalities: To the sweat-collar -I secure, in .any suitable and well-known manner, two or more thongs or straps, S S, the free ends of which I pass around the front of the collar A, thence back over the exterior of the collar and under the hame. B, by which latter said thong is pressed into the usual depression, 11, of the collar, and is thus to a certain degree bound by the hame. At the back edge of the hame I pro vide the strap with a lateral projection, D, by which it abutsagainst the aforesaid edge of the hame, and thereby prevents the thong from being drawn out from under the hame. For the aforesaid abutment I prefer to employ a buckle or slideadjustably connected with the thong or strap 8, and having a rigid abutting shoulder rising frormthe plane of the buckle-frame; and for this purpose I have invented the device illustrated more particularly in Fig. III of the drawings, and consisting, essentially, of two side bars, a a, united at one end by a cross-bar, b, at the opposite end by a vertical wall, 0, projecting at right angles from the plane of the side bars, and at the center by a cross-bar, d, provided with a stud, c, all of which members are formed in one piece. This strap-retaining device I connect with the thong s by passing the tip or free end thereof under the end wall, 0, thence over the central cross-bar, d, and thence under the cross-bar b, and in this operation I insert the stud c in the requisite hole in the thong or strap to bring the end wall a to abut against the rear edge of the hame, as best seen in Fig. II of the drawings.

The dotted lines in Figs. III and IV of the drawings represent the thong or strap. Said thong is provided with a series of holes at different points of its length, so as to allow the before-described strap-retainer to be shifted and adjusted in its position on the thong, according to size of the collar andliame to which the device is to be applied.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sweat-collar attachment consisting of thongs attached to the sweat-collar, and adapted to pass between the hame and collar proper, and the lateral projection on the thongs at the back edge of the hame to prevent the with drawa-l of the thongs, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a sweat-collar, of I thongs secured thereto, and the laterally-projecting abutment adjustably connected to the free end of the thongs, and adapted to bear against the edge of the hame.

3. The within-described strap-retaining device, consisting of the side bars, a a, united at oneend by the cross-bar b, at the opposite end by the wall 0, projecting at right angles from the plane of the side bars, and at the center by the cross-bar d, provided with the stud c, all formed in one piece, substantially as described and shown.
