Description
June 1962 M. HURWITZ 3,040,750
BRASSIERE CONSTRUCTION Filed Dec. 21, 1959 INVENTOR. M15114)? 5 05/2 Z 3 8 irrazzmz Unite. States Patent 3,040,750 BRASSIERE CONSTRUCTION Miriam Hurwitz, Nee-Classic Corset Studio, 203 Ave. A, New York, NY. Filed Dec. 21, 1959, Ser. No. 861,072 1 Claim. (Cl. 128-482) This invention relates to brassieres and, more particularly, to special purpose brassieres.
It is an object of the present invention to provide new and novel brassiere construction which will form the breasts into a completely new and different shape while providing proper and adequate support therefor to the utmost comfort of the wearer.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a brassiere which is extremely comfortable, readily applied and removed, and which will provide an unusually attractive appearance.
Stillan additional object of the present invention is to provide a brassiere of the type described which is extremely simple in construction, adjustable within certain limits to the size of the wearer, and which will readily stay in proper place during use.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a brassiere made in accordance with one form of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a rear perspective view of the device shown in FIGURE 1 in a disassembled position;
FIGURE 3 is a rear plan view of a slightly modified form of construction;
FIGURE 4 is a front perspective view of still another form of the present invention;
FIGURE 5 is a front 'view of the brassiere shown in FIGURE 3, illustrating the manner in which such is applied to associated garments.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to FIGURES 1 and 2 thereof, a brassiere made in accordance with one form of the present invention is shown to include a two piece chest encircling band made up of two individual segments 12 of substantially identical size and shape. Each end of one of the segments 12 is provided with a set of fasteners 14, whereas each end of the other one of the segments 12 is provided with a set of cooperating fastener elements 16. By connecting the respective sets of fastening elements 14 with the associated cooperating fasteners 16, the segments 12 of the chest encircling band may be secured together in a manner shown in FIGURE 1. One end of each such segment 12 is provided with an elastic strip 15, which is adjacent to the back of the wearer, upon which the respective fasteners 14, 16 are mounted.
A breast receiving cup 17 is mounted upon each such band segment 12. As is clearly shown in FIGURES l and 2 of the drawing, each such breast receiving cup 17 is of generally hollow truncated conical configuration, being constructed from a plurality of trapezoidal segments 18, secured together by stitching 20 to form a side wall, and a smaller base wall 22 secured to the periphery of the side wall by means of additional stitching 24. Thus, while each of the cups 17 is slightly flexible, each cup will substantially maintain its shape while flexing only sufliciently to accommodate the breast received therewithin.
In FIGURES 3 and 5 of the drawing, a slightly modified form of construction 30 is shown wherein the chest encircling band 32 is of generally one piece construction. The rearmost portion of the band has normally disconnected terminal strips 35 of elastic material, upon which cooperating fastener elements 34, 36 are mounted. This Patented June 26, 1962 The front side of the band is provided with terminal portions, each having a pair of fastening elements 44, 46, mounted thereupon for applying the brassiere to the chest of the wearer. This arrangement is also provided with a pair of substantially hollow truncated conical cups 17 of the type hereinbefore described. The elastic strip 48 of the chest encircling band 42 of this arrangement, however, allows for limited flexing of the brassiere during use and also provides a completely self contained size adjustment feature which will enable the brassiere to be worn by women of different size groups.
It will be noted that in each embodiment of the present invention, the space between the breast receiving cups is filled with an inverted trapezoidal panel, as is the central portion of the back of the brassiere provided with a similar trapezoidal panel. These front and back trapezoidal sections, whether split or not, constitute a fulcrum and a reciprocal base, respectively, thus forming the foundation of a suspension arrangement between two rigid posts. The inverted trapezoidal shape is critical, as a straight panel would not operate in the similar manner and could not accomplish the suspension feature on the human body. While the trapezoidal sections are preferably elastic, and the sides of the band are non-elastic, it will be recognized that this arrangement may be reversed by making such trapezoidal sections of nonelastic material and thus making the sides of the band of an elastic material, in which event the results would be substantially the same.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A brassiere comprising, in combination, a chest encircling band, releasable fastening means carried by said band, a pair of breast receiving cups carried upon said band, each one of said cups being of substantially hollow truncated conical configuration, said fastening means comprising a pair of sets of cooperating hook and eye fastening elements mounted upon said band for selective releasable engagement with each other to define a substantially annular band for encircling the chest of the wearer, a pair of substantially trapezoidal shaped panels one at the front and one at the back side of said chest encircling band, said panel at said front side of said band being interposed between said breast receiving cups, said trapezoidal panels being constructed of a selected one of elastic and non-elastic materials, and the remaining portion of said band being constructed from the other one of said elastic and inelastic materials.
