Description

J1me 1955 H. c. COTSAKIS 2,709,811
BRASSIERE Filed April 24, 1951 FIG. 1
FIG. '3
JNVENTOR. HELENE 'C. COTSAK I 5 BY 6/10 410m ATTORNEY United States Patent Q 2,709,811 nnassrnnn Helene C. Cotsakis, Atlanta, Ga. Application April 24, 1951, Serial No. 222,568 2 Claims. (Cl. 2-42) My invention relates to a brassiere, and more particularly to a strapless, semi-brassiere which supports the breasts from beneath and leaves the upper portions exposed in a pleasing, rounded and uplifted form.
Knowing the vanity of women when they are garbed in swim suits, sun suits, low-cut evening gowns and other strapless creations, I have originated a strapless garment which I call a sub-bra and which adds beauty to the womans bustline by giving the busts a more natural uplift than was heretofore accomplished by brassieres.
Various types of semi-brassieres have been designed heretofore, and much use has been made of stays, straps,
supports and pads in an effort to produce an attractive and natural appearance in busts which tend to flatten downwardly due to the weakening of the various muscles, but none have achieved the simplicity and eifectiveness of my brassiere in rounding out the uplifted breasts.
An object of my invention is to provide a padded semibrassire which serves as a cushioned pillow upon which the breasts lie.
Another object is to provide a brassiere which lifts the breasts and exposes the upper portion thereof in a rounded and pleasing form.
Another object of my invention is to provide a brassire in which stays and elastic materials have been eliminated in any portions which would tend to flatten the breasts, and band around the inidriff which give the appearance of a bulky waistline obviated.
Other and further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a brassire embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the brassiere shown in Fig. 1 as it would appear on a wearer.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view showing the positioning of my brassire and its padded member.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a detail.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a padding unit for my brassiere.
In the embodiment chosen for purpose of illustration, I have shown a strapless, semi-brassiere having a body portion having terminal end portions 11, 11' which are provided with customary adjustable fastening means 12 so that when the brassiere is placed around the body of a person the terminal ends will meet at the back and can be fastened in the customary manner. My brassiere is provided with a pair of substantially identical pockets 13, 13 which are adapted to receive the lower portion of the breasts, and the width of my brassiere is such that the upper marginal edge 14 will lie only slightly above the center of the breasts. Elastic material 15 may be inserted where desirable to give the brassiere a snug fit, and the upper marginal edge 14 may be contoured, as shown, to give a pleasing and attractive appearance. Rufiies or other trimming 16 may be added at the upper marginal edge to add to the allure and attractiveness of the garment.
My brassire is provided with inner lining portions 17, 17' which underlie, or extend in back of, the pockets 13, 13, respectively. The lining portions 17, 17' are provided with vertical slits 18, 18', respectively, for the in- 2,709,81 l Patented June 7, 1955 sertion of a resilient padding member 19 between the lining and the outer material of the brassire. This padding member may be made of spongy rubber or other suitable resilient material, and it is substantially hemispherical in shape, conforming generally to the shape of the lower edge of a natural human breast, and being hollow on the inside or provided with a concave interior wall 20 upon which the lower half of the breast rests when my brassiere is being worn.
A resilient padding member 19 is inserted through each of the slits 18, 18 so as to lie with its convex outer surface facing outwardly in the pockets 13, 13', and with its concave inner surface 20 turned rearwardly toward the lining in the brassire so that when the brassire is e placed about the body of a wearer, the lower portions of the breasts will lie upon the concave inner space of the resilient pads, and when the brassiere is fastened tightly around the body of the wearer, the pads 19 will act as cushioned pillows upon which the lower portions of the breasts rest so as to lift the breasts upwardly in a natural and well rounded form. It will be noted that according to my construction the entire upper portion of the breasts is left uncovered so that there is nothing to obstruct the natural, healthy and well rounded form imparted by my brassiere.
It will be obvious that my half-cup brassiere and halfcup pad combination can be used in any type of garments such as sun suits, swim suits, evening gowns and other strapless garments, and that this construction may be arranged in various sizes and made of various materials. In fact, while I have illustrated and described my invention in a very practical embodiment thereof without attempting to illustrate and describe other embodiments and adaptations which I contemplate, various changes may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a brassiere having a pair of partial pockets contoured to receive and cover the lower portion only of the human breast, lining on said brassiere forming backing for said pockets, said lining being provided with slits for the insertion of padding material into said partial pockets, and resilient padding material in each of said pockets, said padding material being contoured similarly to said partial pockets and cooperating with said pockets to support the breast from beneath and leave the upper portion of the breast completely exposed.
2. In a brassiere having a pair of partial pockets contoured to receive and cover the lower portion only of the human breast, lining on said brassire forming backing for said pockets, and resilient padding material removably held in each of said pockets, said padding material being substantially hemispherical in shape and outwardly contoured similarly to said partial pockets and provided with a concave inner wall upon which the breast is adapted to rest, said padding material cooperating with said partial pockets to support the breast from beneath and leave the upper portion of the breast completely exposed.
