Description

Feb. 23, 1954 G. STEINER 2,669,719
BRASSIERE Filed July 14, 1949 ar/cube STE/-62 INVENTOR.
Patented Feb. 23, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in brassieres and has for its primary object the provision of an improved brassiere which will provide a space centrally of each bust pocket to receive and house the breast extensions whereby added comfort is provided for the wearer.
Another object of this invention is to provide means for reinforcing the apertured sections and preferably comprising a continuous circumscribing band or cord to define the generally circular shape of the aperture.
Another object of this invention is to provide a modified form of the device wherein an elastic cord is employed in circumscribing relation around the aperture and wherein a hollow insert is adapted to be mounted in the aperture, the insert having an annular groove in its outer surface engageable by the elastic cord whereby the insert is removably and resiliently retained in the aperture.
Another object of this invention is to provide a circumferentially continuous elastic cord enclosed in reversely folded material around the aperture, and a hollow dome-shaped shell having a circumferential groove insertable in gripping relation by said cord, the said shell being of a size to receive and house a breast extension and having small apertures for ventilation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims which form part of this specification.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brassiere embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a central cross-sectional view of a fragmentary portion of an apertured bust pocket.
Figure 4 is a central cross-sectional view of a fragmentary portion of a modified bust pocket.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral I0 indicates a brassiere comprising two pockets or bust sections II. The bust sections are usually made of frail fabric and are circumscribed and secured by tapes l2, l3 and joined by a vertical tape [5. The tapes are made of stronger material than the material of which the bust sections are made.
Straps l6 are attached at the back opposite form of overcast or overedge stitching 22 around the aperture 20. The stitching prevents the raw edge from fraying. As shown in Figure 3, the aperture 20 serves to receive and house a bust extension or nipple 23.
As shown in modified form in Figure 4, the aperture 20' may be reinforced by infolding the material, shown by the numeral 24, around the aperture 20 and securing the infolded edge by stitching 25.
It is to be noted that a circumferentially continuous elastic cord 26 may be enclosed in the reversely infolded material 24. A hollow domeshaped shell 21 having a circumferential groove 28 is insertable in the aperture 20' with the elastic cord 26 in gripping relation with the groove. The shell is of a size to receive and house a breast extension or nipple. The shell 21 may have apertures 29 for ventilation.
It is also to be noted that the disclosure shown in Figure 4, provides receiving and supporting means, and not merely an aperture for passage therethrough.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a brassire comprising two integral front panel sections forming breast pockets and circumscribed by tapes forming a reinforcement for the edges of said panel sections, said panel sections being convex in shape and tapering laterally from the centers thereof and being joined by shoulder straps to the rear portion of said brassiere; each of said panel sections having an aperture at the mid portion thereof, a circumferentially continuous circumscribing elastic cord reinforcing said apertured portion, and a hollow insert mounted in said aperture and and adapted to receive and house a breast extension, said insert having an annular groove at the base and adjacent the outer surface engageable by said elastic cord, said insert being removably retained in said aperture to permit interchangeability of said inserts.
2. In a brassiere comprising two integral front panel sections forming breast pockets and circumscribed by reinforcement means for the edges of said panel sections, said panel sections being convex in shape and tapering laterally from the centers thereof and being joined by shoulder straps to the rear portion of said brassire; each of said panel sections having an aperture at the mid portion thereof, a circumferentially continuous elastic means reinforcing said apertured portion, and a hollow and ventilated insert mounted in said aperture and adapted to receive and house a breast extension, said insert having an annular groove at the base and adjacent the outer surface engageable by said elastic means, said insert being removably retained in said aperture to permit interchangeability of said inserts.
GERTRUDE STEIINER.
