(Cl. 30-2) The present invention relates to cutting implements generally and in particular to an implement in the form of a razor blade holder for making line cuts through cardboard cartons in order to facilitate opening of the cartons.
An object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable cardboard cutting implement for cutting through the wrappings of commercial packages without cutting into or mutilating the contents of the packages.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a cutter implement capable of accommodating, securing and utilizing a conventional form of safety razor blade as a cutting tool and providing means for positioning the blade in various predetermined and selected exposed positions in order to cut into a carton to a predetermined depth.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a cutter implement holding a conventional form of razor blade and providing means wherein the razor blade may be readily applied to or easily removed from the implement.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a simplified cutter implement employing a razor blade mounted in the holder which is comfortable to use, convenient and efiicient in operation, and one which is highly effective in action.
These and other objects and advantages of the pres ent invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of the implement;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of the assembly shown in FIGURE 1, the dotted line showing the internal construction of the implement;
FIG-URE 3 isan end elevational view;
FIGURE 4 is a side elevational view with one section of the holder removed;
FIGURE 5 is a view taken on the line 55 of FIG- URE 4;
FIGURE 6 is a side elevational view of the other section of the holder showing the razor blade in a position of use;
FIGURE 7 is a side elevational view of a modified form of the invention, the dotted line showing the razor blade in a position of use;
FIGURE 8 is a bottom plan View of the assembly shown in FIGURE 7; and
FIGURE 9 is a view of the assembly shown in FIG- URES 7 and 8 with one-half of the holder removed and with the handle of the holder shown in section.
With reference to the drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the implement of the present invention comprises a holder 10 formed of two sections 12 and 14 and provided with an elongated slot 16 between the sections 12 and 14, the slot 16 being shown most clearly in FIGURE 5.
The slot 16 is provided by shallow recesses 18 and 20 in the lower portions of the sections 12 and 14, respectively, as shown in FIGURE 5.
A support 22 is disposed within the holder 10 between the sections 12 and 1'4 in other recesses 24 and 26, respectively, provided therein, and is mounted in the holder 10 for rocking movement.
The support 22 is in the shape of a half-moon and has a stem 28 rising from the midportion of the curved 3,037,278 Patented June 5, 1962 edge of the support 22 and extending through the top 30 of the holder 10 with a portion adjacent the free end of the stem 28 projecting out of the top 30 of the holder 10.
A razor blade 32 of conventional design and commercially available, is disposed within the holder 10 and is operatively connected to the holder 10 and to the support 22 for movement with the support 22. One edge of the blade 32 is sharpened to a cutting edge as at 34, and the other edge is provided with a reinforcing strip 36 folded over both sides of the blade 32. The strip 36 is partially received in one leg of an inverted V-shaped recess provided in each of the holder sections 12 and 14, as at 38 and 40, respectively, in FIGURE 5, with the remainder of the strip 36 projecting into the deeper recesses 24 and 26 and with the strip 36 backed up by the straight edge of the support 22, as shown in FIG- URE 6.
The holder sections 12 and 14 have nonconfronting sides 42 and 44, respectively, in spaced relation and their confronting sides provided with the above-described recesses 18, 24, 38, and 20, 26, and 40, respectively.
The bottom 46 of the holder 10 has a guide element 48 depending from the section 12 and extending along the section side 42.
A positioning pin 50 projects from the confronting side of the section '12 and is slid-ably received in an elongated slot 52 provided in the razor blade 32. The blade 32 is movable within the holder 10 the length of the slot 52 and is rockable about the pin 50 responsive to rocking movement of the support 22. A nut 54 with a knurled outer surface has internal threadswhich engage external threads provided on the stem 28 and is operable when tightened on the top 30 of the holder .10 to secure the support 22 at either limit of its rocking movement within the holder 10. The stem 28 projects through a slot formed by recesses 56 and 58 in the sections 12 and 14, respectively, and the top 30 of the holder 10 and the nut 54 are provided with interengaging means for releas-ably retaining the support 22 and the blade 32 in the selected position. Specifically, this means consists in teeth on the lower end of the nut, as at '60 in FIGURE 2, and teeth on the top 30 of the holder 10 on each side of the slot formed by the recesses 56 and 58, as at 62 in FIGURE 2.
The sections 12 and 14 are releasably secured together by means of conventional fastening elements such as machine screws 64, shown in FIGURE 2.
In FIGURES 7 to 9 is shown a modified form of the invention in which the holder 10' has all of the components of the invention described with reference to FIG URES 1 to 6, inclusive, but the holder 10 is provided on one end with a fla-t face 66 from which projects a stub shaft 68 over which is fitted a handle 70 provided with a bore 72 conformably shaped to fit the shaft 68.
A machine screw 74 is threadedly engaged in a bore provided in the side of the handle 70 adjacent the face 66 and has its free end bearing against the shaft 68 intermediate the ends of the latter for releasably holding the handle 70 on the holder 10.
In use, the holder 10, 10', may be employed to open cartons along the side edge and around corners by adjusting the blade 32 to a position in which a part of the cutting edge 34 is below the holder bottom 46, 46, and parallel to the guide element 48, 48', and drawing the holder v10, 10', along a carton with the bottom #16, 46' hearing against one face of the carton and the guide element 48, 48' bearing against an adjacent face of the carton.
The blade 32 will only cut into the carton the depth of the projecting portion of the cutting edge, such depth being regulated by the rocking movement of the support 22, 22', it being understood that when the blade 32 is moved between the extreme limits of its movement provided by the recesses 38 and 40, the strip 36 along one side edge of the blade 32 will not be completely seated within the recesses 38 and 4-0 but will be pinched between the sections 12 and 14 and held there by means of machine screws 64.
What is claimed is:
1. In a cardboard cutter implement, a holder having an elongated slot in the bottom thereof, a support disposed within said holder above and spaced from said slot and mounted in said holder for rocking movement, a razor blade provided with a transversely-disposed elongated slot intermediate the sides and ends thereof disposed within said holder between said support and said firstmentioned slot and having one of the sides bearing against the bottom edge of said support, a positioning pin on said holder and extending slidably into the elongated slot in said blade to thereby operatively connect said blade to said support for movement therewith, a stem carried by said support and having a portion adjacent the free end projecting exteriorly of said holder, a nut on the projecting end portion of said stern and operable for rocking said support to extend the razor blade through said slot in selective position, and means on said nut and interengageable with means on said holder for releasably retaining said razor blade in the selective position.
2. In a cardboard cutter implement, a holder having an elongated slot in the bottom thereof, a support disposed within said holder above and spaced from said slot and mounted in said holder for rocking movement, a razor blade provided with a transversely-disposed elongated slot intermediate the sides and ends thereof disposed within said holder between said support and said first-mentioned slot and having one of the sides bearing against the bottom edge of said support, a positioning pin on said holder and extending slidably into the elongated slot in said blade to thereby operatively connect said blade to said support for movement therewith, a stem carried by said support and having a portion adjacent the free end projecting exteriorly of said holder, a nut on the projecting end portion of said stem and operable for rocking said support to extend the razor blade through said slot in selective position, and means embodying teeth on said nut and interengageable with means embodying teeth on said holder for releasably retaining said razor blade in the selective position.
3. A cardboard cutter implement comprising a holder having spaced sides, a bottom, and a top, there being an elongated slot in the bottom and spaced from the sides, a guide element extending along and depending from one of said sides, a half-moon shaped support disposed within said holder and mounted for rocking movement, a razor blade provided with a transversely-disposed elongated slot intermediate the sides and ends thereof disposed within said holder between said support and said first-mentioned slot and having one of the sides bearing against the straight edge of said support, a positioning pin on said holder and extending slidably into the elongated slot in said blade to thereby operatively connect said blade to said support for movement therewith, a stem rising from the mid-portion of the curved edge of said support and extending through the top of said holder and having a portion adjacent the free end projecting out of the top of said holder, a nut on the projecting end portion of said stem and operable for rocking said support to extend the razor blade through said slot in selective position, and means embodying teeth on said nut and interengageable with teeth formed on the top of said holder for releasably retaining said razor blade in the selective position.
4. A cardboard cutter implement comprising a holder having spaced sides, a bottom, and a top, there being an elongated slot in the bottom and spaced from the sides, a guide element extending along and depending from one of said sides, a half-moon shaped support disposed within said holder and mounted for rocking movement, a razor blade provided with a transversely-disposed elongated slot intermediate the sides and ends thereof disposed within said holder between said support and said firstmentioned slot and having one of its sides bearing against the straight edge of said support, a positioning pin on said holder and extending slida'bly into the elongated slot in said blade to thereby operatively connect said blade to said support for movement therewith, a stem rising from the mid-portion of the curved edge of said support and extending through the top of said holder and having a portion adjacent the free end projecting out of the top of said holder, a nut on the projecting end portion of said stem and operable for rocking said support to extend the razor blade through said slot in selective position, means embodying teeth on said not and interengageable with teeth formed on the top of said holder for releasably retaining said razor blade in the selective position, and a handle on said holder.
