UNITED `STATES PATENT -OEFICE M'ILEs vERNON, OERROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, MrLEs VERNON, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Memorandum-Books; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. Y
The object of this invention is to construct a very cheap, but at the same time convenient, memorandum-book having loops to hold a pencil and pockets to hold loose papers, cards, or other articles..
My invention is chiefly applicable to pocket memorandum-books5 and it consists in making or stamping out the cover from one piece of cardboard or other suitable material, as hereinafter described, and then folding the blank thus cut out in such manner that it shall have either inner pockets and a flap, or a flap and loops to hold a pencil, or a flap, loops, and pockets combined7 all of which is hereinafter set forth and particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the blank froln which the cover is formed. Fig. 2 is an isometr'ical perspective view of a book completed, and shown partially open. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the book as it appears when closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate the saine parts in all the gures.
A represents the blank from which vthe cover is made. It is stamped out or cut from a sheet of card-board or other material suitable for making a cover for a memorandumbook.
lm., m', and m are openihgs or portions that are cut away.
The blank is shown inFig. 1 as adapted to form a book having a flap, B, tWo pockets, C
C, and loops D D for holding a pencil, E. The lower portion, A', is connected to the main portion by two necks, D D, and its lower edge, c, is turned over and pasted down on the dotted line c', the fold being central across the necks D D on the dotted line f, said necks thereby forming the loops D D in the finished Application filed December 20, 1883.

article, and the edge B is laid to coincide with the edge b of the main portion A. The two pieces C C are folded on the dotted lines a n, their edges c e overlapping, as at e e, and these overlapping edges are pasted or` otherwise joined, thereby forming the pockets C C in the finished article. rlhc main portion A is then folded across its center on the dotted line o, thereby bringing the necks or loops D D opposite the openings m m', and the flap B is then folded on the line p over the main body of the cover, the loops D D passing through the openings m m', and forming a receptacle for a pencil, E, which latter serves to keep the book closed, as shown in Fig. 3. By leaving off the piece A', a book may be formed with pockets C C, and a flap, B, without the loops; or by leaving off the pieces C C a book may be formed with loops D D and a Hap, B; or the flap, pockets, and loops may be used conjointly, as shown, and above described. The leaves F are stitched in or otherwise attached to and within the cover in the usual manner. By means of this construction a convenient and serviceable memorandum-book may be made at a very small cost, as the labor of stitching in forming the cover is entirely avoided. rlhose portions of A marked tt t may be left olf or cut away, if desired.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. A memorandum-book cover having pockets C C and a iiap, B, provided with openings m', made from one piece of card-board or other suitable material folded as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. A memorandum-book cover having a ilap, B, and loops D D, formed from one and the same piece of card-,board or other suitable material folded as described, for the purpose set forth.
3. A memorandunrbook cover having aflap, B, loops D D, and pockets G C, all formed from one and the same piece of card-board or other suitable material folded as described, for the purposes set forth.
1 MILES VERNON.
