PUMP.
.SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,886, dated August 5, 188%. Application filed December 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. BROOKS, of East Bethel, county of Windsor, State of Vermont, have invented an Improvement in Pumps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. I
This invention has for its object the pro duction of a cheap and efficient pump adapted for window and carriage washing, andother purposes where a cheap portable pump or water-forcing device is needed.
My improved pump consists, essentially, of a sheet-metal case provided at its lower end with an inwardly-moving valve connected with a metal thimble inserted in the said case and soldered therein, the said case having at one side, near its lower end, a branch pipe, which receives a flexible discharge-pipe provided with a nozzle, and near its upper end the said case has an ear or lug, upon which is a removable nozzle-holding clamp adjustably and frictionally held upon the said ear or lug by a set-screw, adjustment of the holder enabling the nozzle and hose to be held in the proper direction with relation to the body of the pump.
Figure 1 shows one of my improved pumps in section, a part of the hose being in section and a part in elevation; and Fig.2 is a section on the dotted line w a The case A, preferably of tin, is provided near its lower end with a thimble, b, soldered therein, and having pivoted upon it, at 2, a valve, 12*, which takes its seat upon a fiat surface, forming part of the said thimble. The thimble is placed in the case A a little way from its lower end, leaving between the thimble and end of the case a foot provided with a series of holes, 3, for the passage of water into the pump when the latter is held in or against the bottom of a pail or other water-supply. The thimble will preferably be screw-threaded to receive the threaded base (Z of a hollow stem, d, adapted to be entered into a hole in a lead or other pipe, which is to be exhausted.
The plunger or piston B consists of a rod of wood properly wound or packed, as at B, with fibrous material, to close the annular space between the plunger and interior of the cylinder for a short distance, as is well understood. The pipe 0, the outlet of the case A, is connected therewith at one side just above the valve 12 The pipe Chas an india-rubber or flexible pipe, e, provided at its upper end with a nozzle, 6. I Near its upper end the case is provided with a lug or car, a, preferably set a little to one side of the center of the case. This lug is embraced by the nozzle holder or clamp c", composed of sheet metal. The ears of the clamp c embrace the ear or lug e, and the said clamp may be turned on the said lug, or on the shank of the thumb-nut, or it might be the screwf extended through the said ear and holder or clamp, as shown, and the said thumb nut or screw, being turned closely, serves to hold the holder and the nozzle in any desired direction with relation to the case A, thus enabling the pump and plunger to be held by the two hands and yet permit the nozzle to be directed in any desired direction, to enable the stream to be delivered just where needed. The dotted and full lines, Fig. 1, show the hose and nozzle in two different positions. This adjustable clamp is a matter of very considerable importance and convenience in the use of the pump. The pipe 0 is provided with a valve at w.
I claim- 1. The pump-case A, having a valve, b and the holes 3 near its bottom, combined with the screw-threaded thimble connected with said case above the holes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
a hand-pump consisting of a plunger, the case A, provided with the adjustable hose-nozzle holder c", and having the holes 3 near its bottom, the thimble 1), containing the valve b and screw-threaded to' receive the stem (1, the pipe 0, having the valve 10 therein, and the hose 0, connected with said pipe *0, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL HOWARD BROOKS.
