PAlNT-SPRAYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,774, dated January 19, 1904;.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. COOPER, Sr. a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint-Sprayers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an apparatus for applying paint or the like, and relates more particularly to devices for applying the paint without the use of a brush.
The object of this invention is to provide a device by which an even and uniform coat of paint may be applied to any surface or surfaces by the use of compressed air or the like.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device wherein any number of colors may be applied by the same machine without a thorough cleansing of the same, as has heretofore been the case.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device which will be simple and cheaply constructed and which may be used by an unskilled operator.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing a plurality of suction-pipes leading thereto. Fig. 3 is a view showing the general method of using the same.
In carrying out my invention I provide a suitable source of air or other fluid pressure, and a pipe 1, leading therefrom, is clamped onto the part 2, the contracted end 3 of which is connected to the valve-casing 4 by the screwthreads. This valve-casing 4 consists of the usual body, and a seat 5 is formed therein. A valve 6, mounted on the lower end of the stem 7, which passes through the plug 8- and stuffing-box 9, is adapted to control the pressure through said valve, and a ring 10 is secured to the upper end of the stem 7 for the purpose of permitting the thumb or finger of the operator to pass therethrough for the purpose of controlling the position of said valve. A nozzle portion 11 is connected with the outlet of the valve-casing 4:, the forward end of said nozzle being tapered and screw-threaded, as indicated at 12, said screw-threaded portion being connected with a T 14,. The outlet 15 is threaded within said T at a point opposite that at which the part 11 is inserted in said T, and an elbow connection 16 is connected with the other opening in said T. A suction-pipe 17 is connected with the elbow, and a flexible suction-pipe 18 is clamped onto the end of the pipe 17, and in the use of the device said flexible suction-pipe leads to the supply of paint or like material which is to be applied.
As shown in Fig. 2, the pipe 17 is connected to the valve 19, with which the pipes 20 21 are connected, and a plug 22 of said valve is adapted to connect the pipe 17 with either of the pipes 20 21, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2, thereby permitting the operator to carry two supplies of paint or the like and readily change from one to the other.
I desire to call attention to the fact that my improved device may not only be used as a sprayer, but may also be employed to remove the scales from the metal and to clean the surface to which the paint is to be applied previous to such application, and this is accomplished by means of the compressed air.
While I have herein shown and described a practical embodiment of my invention, yet it will be noted that various slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
